Tokyo Street Style - Sakurako, Harajuku

08:38
Meet Sakurako, an 18-year-old Japanese student with a strong passion for art and fashion. When going through difficult times in life, Sakurako found confidence and inspiration through a supportive teacher, and from a group of fashionable friends she met on the streets of Harajuku. "Our Streets, My Style" is our original show taking you up close and personal with Japanese street style personalities. Meet the amazing people featured in the daily street snaps Tokyo Fashion has been publishing for over a decade. Sakurako on Instagram and Twitter: https://instagram.com/illbabigstar/ https://twitter.com/_DANBOWL_ We first noticed Sakurako when she was a Tokyo high school student featured in the Japanese teen fashion magazine HR. Sakurako ran with a group of colorful Japanese teens whose street styles and lives were chronicled in the magazine. Sakurako is not a tall girl, but her personality is very big, and that was apparent even in the first photos we saw of her. After meeting her in person on the streets of Harajuku, we immediately became fascinated by her bigger than life personality mixed with a quiet introspective side. She told us that she had confidence issues when she was younger and both art and fashion had helped her to grow as a person, with Harajuku being a big part of that growth. In 2017, HR Magazine shut down. Around that same time, Sakurako graduated from high school. After graduation, she decided to attend one of Tokyo's most well known art schools, Tama Art University. Sakurako and her friends from HR continue to visit Harajuku, and their colorful fun styles are evolving as they all age. Sakurako is increasingly focused on her art, and finding ways to mix art and fashion. She told us that she plans to be an artist for all of her life, and probably to teach art to young people in the future. After having her life positively impacted by a supportive teacher, Sakurako wants to pass that support on to the next generation of creative young people. Follow Sakurako on Instagram to see more of her art and colorful fashion. You can also ask her questions directly via her social media accounts. Please leave comments in the YouTube comments if you have suggestions for future episodes of this show. Thank you for watching and for supporting Japanese street fashion. An Expert's Guide to Vintage Shopping in Tokyo | WWD

08:55
Designer John Elliott and WWD’s style director Alex Badia head to Kōenji, a district of Tokyo, to go vintage shopping in three stores, including Don Don Down and Slut. While finding one-of-a-kind pieces, Elliot discusses why he thinks Tokyo contains the best shopping in the world, what it was like creating women’s wear for the first time and where he finds inspiration for his collections. Follow along to see the best of Tokyo’s underground, hard-to-find vintage spots. Subscribe to WWD's YouTube channel here: http://bit.ly/WWDYTSubscribe As a child growing up in San Francisco, at about age 8 John Elliott decided he wanted to start his own company. After sketching sneaker designers in class, his mother encouraged him to send them to Nike. Surprisingly, he received a written response from the company, which serves as “hallowed inspiration” for his streetwear brand now that he has collaborated with the activewear giant — something that he dreamed of for more than 20 years. Japanese Street Style - Kanji, Harajuku

06:13
Meet Kanji, a Japanese high school student who traded karate and judo for artistic self expression through avant-garde handmade Harajuku street fashion. "Our Streets, My Style" is our original show taking you up close and personal with Japanese street style personalities. Meet the amazing people featured in the daily street snaps Tokyo Fashion has been publishing for over a decade. Kanji on Instagram & Twitter https://instagram.com/freiheit2348.texas7347/ https://twitter.com/kakakakantii2 We met Kanji on the streets of Tokyo in the fall of 2017, less than a year before this interview. In the months since, he quickly established himself as one of the most extreme and avant-garde dressers of the current generation of Harajuku kids. Without any fashion education (he attends a normal Japanese high school), but with a head full of ideas, Kanji creates most of his own outfits on his bedroom floor. While we watched him roam the streets of Harajuku in increasingly extreme handmade fashion since early 2018, his breakout came during the spring 2018 Tokyo Fashion Week events. Kanji wore a different handmade outfit every day of Tokyo Fashion Week. Those seven avant-garde outfits - culminating on the final day with a piece called "Mother" that featured three full sized mannequin heads - got noticed by many people, including a battalion of international street fashion photographers. Kanji is young - and less than a year into his fashion experience - so he's still figuring out his philosophy and future plans. He himself has said that he expects to make mistakes and change direction many times before finding his preferred path forward. In the meantime, he is learning a lot, making friends, having fun, and creating one-of-a-kind fashion that even the famed streets of Harajuku have never seen before. We hope you enjoy our interview with Kanji. If you're interested in seeing more of his fashion up close or asking him questions, consider following him on Instagram or Twitter. Also, please let us know what you think of this video in the YouTube comments, and tell us what we can do to improve this interview series in the future. Japanese Street Fashion - Sakuran, Harajuku

08:18
Sakuran is an 18-year-old Japanese fashion student known for her one-of-a-kind remake outfits. She grew up in a small town 1,000 km from Tokyo, but eventually discovered her love of extreme fashion on the streets of Harajuku. "Our Streets, My Style" is our original show taking you up close and personal with Japanese street style personalities. Meet the amazing people featured in the daily street snaps Tokyo Fashion has been publishing for over a decade. Sakuran on Instagram and Twitter: https://instagram.com/sakuran_is_/ https://twitter.com/sakuran_is_ When we first met Sakuran, she was a high school student living in a small town in Japan's norther most prefecture, Hokkaido. She was on a visit to Tokyo when a shop owner told us to drop everything and come to his shop right away. He had a new customer who we absolutely must meet. We rushed over and were greeted by a young Japanese woman - dressed in handmade fashion, silver platform boots, and a painted face - the likes of which we had never seen. Though young, it was clear Sakuran was one of a kind from our first meeting. She threw all rules out the window and wore what she wanted to wear, regardless of how extreme it might look compared to other fashion on the street. Over the next year, we got to know her during her regular visits to Harajuku. She worked at a part time job in Hokkaido, saved up money for several months, then spent all of that money to visit Tokyo for a weekend. In addition to her fashion, we were impressed with her determination to be part of the Harajuku fashion scene a thousand kilometers away. Over the next year Sakuran became friends with many Harajuku kids, shop staff, and other Tokyo street style personalities. Her confidence and styling skills also evolved as she grew closer to graduation from high school. Eventually, she graduated from her small town high school and was accepted into the honors program at Tokyo's Vantan Fashion College. Now a student at Vantan in Tokyo and working part time at a popular independent Harajuku select shop, Sakuran remains fiercely unique. She dreams of being a designer, and wants to encourage other people to find what's unique inside of themselves and amplify it. Follow Sakuran on Instagram to see more of her art and colorful fashion. You can also ask her questions directly via her social media accounts. Please leave comments in the YouTube comments if you have suggestions for future episodes of this show. Japanese Street Fashion - Shoshi, Harajuku

06:15
Meet Shoshi, a well-known Japanese street style icon and aspiring select shop owner. Shoshi's life was changed forever after discovering a passion for fashion on the streets of Harajuku. "Our Streets, My Style" is our original show taking you up close and personal with Japanese street style personalities. Meet the amazing people featured in the daily street snaps Tokyo Fashion has been publishing for over a decade. Shoshi on Instagram and Twitter: https://instagram.com/we_can_do_anything/ https://twitter.com/_BABYSLUT_ We first met Shoshi (aka Shoushi or Shoshipoyo) on the streets of Harajuku over five years ago. At that time, Shoshi - who prefers the pronoun they/them - was a Japanese high school student trying out different styles to find out who they were. In addition to their love of fashion, Shoshi was (and is) passionate about music. Shoshi counts Brooke Candy and Lady Gaga as two artists who've inspired them. Over the years, we watched Shoshi's style and interests evolve. After graduating from high school and enrolling in Tokyo's most famous Fashion School, Bunka Fashion College, their unique style and personality began inspiring a younger generation of Harajuku kids, establishing Shoshi as an icon of the Japanese street fashion scene. Recent years have seen Shoshi travel to Europe and America, collaborate with international creatives, work at one of Tokyo's most influential boutiques (Dog Harajuku), graduate from Bunka Fashion College, and flirt with the launch of their own online select shop. Shoshi's future plans are far from clear, as Shoshi is always in motion and full of dreams and ambitions. What is clear is that wherever Shoshi goes from here, their time spent on the streets of Harajuku changed their life forever - for the better. Follow Shoshi on Instagram if you'd like to keep up with their adventures. You can also ask them questions directly via their social media linked above. Japanese Street Fashion - Raw, Harajuku

07:40
Meet Raw, a standout Japanese student at Tokyo's famous Bunka Fashion College. After playing sports in high school, Raw had a life-changing experience while experimenting with fashion. "Our Streets, My Style" is our original show taking you up close and personal with Japanese street style personalities. Meet the amazing people featured in the daily street snaps Tokyo Fashion has been publishing for over a decade. Raw on Instagram & Twitter https://www.instagram.com/lifecoming1/ https://twitter.com/coming1101 We first met Raw (Kota) on the streets of Harajuku back in 2017. We got to know him while he attended his first year at the most famous fashion school in Asia, Japan's Bunka Fashion College. Often wearing his own handmade (or at least hand modified) creations, he immediately struck us as someone who was more serious about fashion than the average Harajuku kid. During the summer of 2017, Raw scored an internship at the world famous Dog Harajuku boutique (known for their relationship with Lady Gaga as well as numerous other international celebrities and stylists) - establishing himself as one of the new faces worth watching in the Japanese street fashion scene. Now a second year student at Bunka Fashion College, Raw continues to focus on making his own outfits as well as expanding his skills in fashion styling and fashion promotion. He also spends time thinking about how modern social media impacts what fashion people wear, and how people present themselves on social media. Enjoy Raw's interview, and please leave comments if you have any thoughts or questions on what he has to say, on Bunka Fashion College, or on Harajuku. 1980s & 1990s Fashion in Tokyo at Funktique Harajuku

05:51
A visit to Funktique, a popular Harajuku 1980s and 1990s vintage fashion boutique. "Elleanor's Tokyo" is a weekly video blog by Elleanor - a 19-year-old English-speaking Japanese girl who spends most of her life in Harajuku. The Harajuku fashion scene has seen a boom in resale and vintage shops in the last 10 years. Funktique is a relatively recent addition to the scene - having opened in 2012 - but they have quickly built a following among some of Harajuku's most well-known street fashion kids. The shop's aesthetic is New York 1980s and 1990s fashion seen through a Harajuku street lens. They specialize in handpicked pieces and deadstock items, but anything that the owners find interesting might end up in the shop. Beyond just their vision for the shop, Funktique is unique in Harajuku for two more reasons. First, one of the owners (Misato) is fluent in English. She's happy to talk to foreign customers about Harajuku, and to offer advice on what coordinates she likes. Secondly, Funktique Harajuku has an inspirational back story. The owners have had a shop in Fukushima for 10 years, but were forced to leave town after the March 2011 earthquake. Rather than giving up on their dreams, they not only moved to Tokyo to open another shop, but they also eventually re-opened their shop in the disaster zone. If you'd like to know more about that story, please check our interview with Misato here: http://tokyofashion.com/funktique-harajuku-vintage/ We hope that you enjoy Elleanor's shop visit and please let us know if you'd like to see more shop visits in the future. Also, make sure that you stop by and say hello to Misato and the Funktique team the next time you're in Harajuku! Funktique is located very near to Dog Harajuku. Here is a map/address: http://www.funktique.com/ Funktique Online http://funktique.com/ http://instagram.com/funktiquetokyo https://twitter.com/funktiquetokyo https://facebook.com/FUNKTIQUETOKYO Misato http://instagram.com/misato_funktique https://twitter.com/dolcevoce Ketsumo http://instagram.com/ketsumopolice https://twitter.com/k230p A big thank you to Funktique, Misato, and Ketsumo for letting us film this episode. 07:50
From Gothic Lolitas to Yoyogi Rockabillies, the Tokyo neighborhood of Harajuku is a wellspring of some of the world's most unique and extreme fashion trends. Rife with restaurants, shops, and cafes, it's a hangout 'hood for the city's youth, whose style is confined to uniforms from elementary school through to high school graduation. And, perhaps to rebel from such strict sameness, they spend their weekends seeing how far they can push the limits. One of the oldest and most pervasive Harajuku style groups is Decora, characterized by a pursuit of kawaii, or "cuteness," which is expressed in massive piles of hair clips, face bandaids, creative layering, and a mishmash of colors and textures. Don't let "cute" confuse you: There's nothing delicate or elegant about Decora. It's bright, it's loud, and it's in your face (or rather, on your face, via a Hello Kitty bandaid). Though the style can appear as frivolous as a Halloween costume, there's a real statement behind the bevy of barrettes. In the face of pervasive group-mindedness, a rigid social order, and cultural reticence, the Decora have figured out a way to break free. In the first episode of our new documentary series, Style Out There, our host Asha Leo travels to Harajuku to meet with street fashion superstars, like 90884 designer Kurebayashi, Junnyan, and Shoichi Aoki, the founder of FRUiTS magazine, to peel back the rainbow-colored stickers and uncover the depth behind Decora. 40 Best Outfits From Tokyo Street Fashion

02:45
When you think of or talk about Japan, the general picture that comes to mind is of the past when the women wore their colorful silk kimonos and narrow, long skirts that made them stride slowly and gave them a natural modesty. However, that is something that can relegate strictly to the past since the fashions there are no longer the same, especially when you consider the fashions in a city like Tokyo. That is why, if you are thinking in terms of original and awesome oriental prints to wear to an advantage to be like the people in Tokyo, then you are not on the right track but it is a great idea nevertheless. We are saying this fashion has a new look in Tokyo. To do as the women and girls in Tokyo, are doing in terms of fashion, you will need to know all about patterns so that you can get the mix right. As you may be aware, the girls and women are blessed with ivory complexions, dark straight hair, high cheekbones, slanted black eyes and really petite builds. Which means that anything they wear will make them look really cute and feminine. But if you look at the fashions of Tokyo today, you will realize that they have worked really hard to break this stereotype to look more edgy but without losing any of their petite charms. Yes, it does sound like a big deal and believe us it is. Because they have really veered away from their usual look and come up with something so distinctive, that one cannot help but be astounded by this. But before you jump into this surprisingly addictive way of looking at fashions, we suggest that you delve deeper into trendy and obsessive geometric print outfits for this year. At this point, this may astound you, but you will understand what we mean in a while. Because difficult as it may seem, we are going to look at Tokyo fashions, and try to decipher the main elements of these fashion trends. We may not be able to cover everything, but we will try and decipher the main elements. We are sure that with these tips and hints and armed with the images we have given here; you can come up with your own versions of the Tokyo street fashion looks. Made the most of their petite frame: Having a slender and petite frame can be a big blessing as it provides a good frame for most clothing. They have done away with the need to conceal their legs and gone with short outfits that draws our eyes to their lovely legs. But not all their outfits are short as some of them are long and wacky. You will also notice that despite their relatively lesser height than westerners or people from other parts of the world, they do have long legs. Edgy and bright: They have gone with colors that are edgy and bright to make a point. Their makeup is no longer of the type that is subtle and hardly there. The Tokyo fashion looks do not shy away from bright pinks, blues and greens in clothing as well as makeup. What is more, they have also gone for the edgy look by adding oddly matching but also conflicting layers to their clothing. If you take a careful look, you will find that Tokyo fashion covers everything from top to toe and that is why they have really chunky and colorful shoes as well. Music by Dan-O at DanoSongs.com

Japanese independent fashion brand BERCERK skipped the runway and brought their Spring collection directly to the rainy streets of Harajuku - the youth-centric Tokyo neighborhood where the brand was born. Founded by Cham, a staffer at the uber-popular Harajuku boutique Never Mind the XU, BERCERK features dark gender neutral streetwear with the concept of " Braver than men, more feminine than women." The guerilla fashion show was titled "Dirty City" and featured six different looks from the latest BERCERK collection. 10 Ways to Wear Crop Tops - Tokyo Fashion

01:53
Ten ways to wear crop tops - get style inspiration directly from the streets of Tokyo! Up until a few years ago, showing midriff or belly buttons was uncommon in Japanese street fashion. That changed when a huge crop top boom hit Tokyo in the summer of 2013. Since then, crop tops have become one of the hottest summer coordinates on the streets of Japan. Crop tops are like any other fashion item: there are as many ways to wear them as there are wearers. Some girls go modest (we've even seen crop tops worn over t-shirts), others go extreme, and most fall somewhere in between. Check out these ten looks that we selected to see how some of Harajuku's famous street fashion kids are wearing crop tops. Let us know your thoughts on crop tops - and Japanese street fashion - in the comments. Also, thank you for all of the suggestions about future videos. Please keep them coming. We're keeping track of all of your suggestions and are planning many new Tokyo Fashion videos in the coming months! What Not To Wear In Japan: Clothes To Avoid Wearing In Japan | 訪日外国人に服装についてのアドバイス

02:14
If you are coming to Japan, you may wonder what to wear in Japan. Instead of what to wear I thought it would be easier to understand some things you should avoid wearing when in Japan. Apart from the things you should avoid, you can basically where anything you like. Even, if you do wear some of the clothing mentioned in the video - it doesn't really matter because Japanese don't expect foreigners to dress like them. However, it's good to respect and understand the culture of one's country before visiting! Hope this video helps! BIG THANK YOU TO THE PEOPLE WHO LET ME INTERVIEW THEM! Japanese Street Fashion - Dice-K, Harajuku

05:09
Meet Dice-K, a young Japanese fashion designer and creative whose brand GlamHate celebrates vampires, glam - and hate! "Our Streets, My Style" is our original show taking you up close and personal with Japanese street style personalities. Meet the amazing people featured in the daily street snaps Tokyo Fashion has been publishing for over a decade. Dice-K on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/dice_kkkk/ https://www.instagram.com/glamhate/ https://glamhate.xyz We first met Dice-K at a Lady Gaga concert in Tokyo nearly five years ago. Since then, they enrolled in - and recently graduated from - one of Japan's most prestigious universities, launched their own fashion brand, and evolved in so many ways (both aesthetic and personal). Over the years, we've been ever impressed not only by Dice-K's style, but also their thoughtful consideration of fashion, life, and the intersection of the two. When we sat down with Dice-K on the street in Harajuku this week, they were very open about their personal history and their current feelings on fashion and life. Dice-K is about to release the second collection of their own brand GlamHate. The new GlamHate collection is called "VAMPYRE", but it's not meant in the old fashioned way. Dice-K explains (in the video) that the vampire concept is related to the way fashion trends spread through social media. Popular influencers are vampires who infect others on social media with their taste, and those newly created vampires spread the trends to others. The number of vampires infected by these fashion trends grow exponentially and uncontrollably around the globe. Please watch the interview video to find out more about Dice-K in their own words. Also - if you are in Japan, Dice-K would love to meet you in person at the exhibition for the new GlamHate "VAMPYRE" collection in Tokyo from April 19-22, 2018 at ShibuyaRoom. See the details of the exhibition and map at the official GlamHate Instagram page: https://www.instagram.com/glamhate/ Please subscribe to the Tokyo Fashion YouTube Channel: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=tokyofashionnews See our daily Japanese street snaps on Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/tokyofashion/ Music and sound effects used under license.

City Guide | Tokyo | Vintage Shopping

02:55
Joined by our host, Shurland Ayers, we take a look at some of our favorite second-hand/vintage boutiques in Tokyo. With a focus on the Shimokitazawa neighborhood, we try out best to cover a range of nostalgic offerings, from Western, old military garb, 90s throwbacks, down to rockabilly wear. We then make a stop to one of the most colourful districts in the city: Harajuku. Come along and hopefully this video helps with your dig next time you visit Tokyo.
