1995 Xmas Catalogue vs. 2017 Catalogue | Nostalgia Nerd

2 Catalogues (or catalogs if you prefer). One from Christmas 1995, the other from Christmas 2017. One from the store formerly known as Index, the other from Argos (they were essentially the same thing). So let's see how Christmas 1995 compares to Christmas 2017 from a purely consumerism point of view. Also with a heavy bias towards watches, televisions, game consoles and the like. Because that's what I do. Argos opens the doors to their new digital concept store

02:42
Future of the high street revealed as Argos opens the doors to their new digital concept store • First of six new concept stores nationwide will open today in London's Old Street, 40 years after it first opened its doors • Tables of tablets to replace the laminated paper catalogues, pencil and slips and stock checkers, providing a paperless shopping experience • Customers will still be able to pick up and take home the famous Argos catalogue in store, as well as browse the digital version online • fast track 60 second collection points promise to give shoppers fastest service on the high street • Stores will be able to serve over 20,000 products on a same day basis in over 740 stores • 70% of the population shop with Argos at least once a year. Argos pledges to 'take all customers on the digital journey' deploying staff as specially trained 'navigators' Argos, one of the UK's largest high street and digital retailers, will today unveil its first digital concept store that will transform the high street shopping experience for customers and establish a seamless digital experience across all its shopping channels -- store, internet and mobile -- with same day availability on over 20,000 products. The new stores will include a sleek and modern look, with tables of tablet 'catalogue/shopping trolleys' replacing the laminated paper catalogues and stock checkers. Dynamic digital product and sales display screens will replace static paper posters, while free WiFi, fast track 60 second collection points and store colleagues focused on providing more help for customers on the shop floor, will complete the much heralded transformation. Marking a key milestone in its 40-year history, the new stores will equip Argos for the digital revolution, as shoppers increasingly browse and buy online via PCs, tablets and other mobile devices, while still needing the immediacy of a local store to pick up their purchases. Argos now generates 43 per cent of its sales via digital channels, with revenue from mobile phones and tablets accounting for 16 per cent of the total. 90 per cent of all customer transactions touch one of Argos' stores. The concept has been tested in the North East since January, and the trial will now be extended into around 50 stores, enabling both the operational and customer offer aspects of this new network to be tested over the peak trading period. The first of six new Argos digital concept stores will open to the public at 189 Old Street. Others will open shortly in Old Kent Road, Marble Arch and Chancery Lane in London as well as in Colchester, Essex and Dunfermline, Fife.

Argos Catalogue Highlights | NEW Catalogue | Out Now

10:22
The New Argos Catalogue is out so I thought i'd go through it and see what it has to offer. Also I talk about the time when I worked at Argos. Please note this video is not sponsored or endorsed by Argos. ► About Argos Argos is a British catalogue retailer operating in the United Kingdom and Ireland, and a subsidiary of Home Retail Group. The company trades both through physical stores and online, with over 750 stores and 800 million website visits a year, making it one of the largest high street retailers online in the United Kingdom. Argos was established in 1973, by Richard Tompkins, the founder of the Green Shield Stamps scheme, who rebranded the existing Green Shield Stamps catalogue shops as Argos, before opening new Argos branded stores later in the year. BAT Industries purchased the company in 1979, and in 1990, it was listed on the London Stock Exchange, where it became a constituent of the FTSE 100 Index. In April 1998, GUS plc bought the company, and it became part of the Home Retail Group, when GUS split in October 2006. In August 2013, it was estimated that 96% of the population of the United Kingdom was within 10 miles of an Argos branch. In April 2016, Argos' parent Home Retail Group agreed to a £1.4 billion takeover by the UK supermarket chain Sainsbury's. The acquisition is due to be completed by the third quarter of 2016. Sainsbury's intend to close a number of separate Argos stores and integrate them into its supermarkets. Argos also do ebay click and collect service, so you can have your ebay items sent to your local argos instead of waiting in for the postal service. ► Argos Catalogue Argos publishes catalogues twice a year (a spring/summer edition in January and an autumn/winter edition in July). Current editions have well over 1500 pages containing photographs of items, brief descriptions, prices and a catalogue number. Store copies are ring-bound and the pages individually laminated. The in-store shopping process involves completing a small order form with the catalogue numbers of the desired items. Argos provides red pencils in stores for this purpose. The order form is taken to the checkout and the items paid for, then the customer is given a receipt which indicates where they should wait for their items to be brought to them from the storeroom. Additionally, "Quick pay" kiosks are also available to place orders and pay. On handover of the goods, the receipt is stamped by the store "received" so it cannot be re-used. Catalogues are complemented by seasonal sales flyers, offering non-catalogue lines and price reductions on existing deals. Other items are sometimes available in stores, such as ex-catalogue goods at reduced prices, especially after the launch of a new catalogue. In March 2006, Argos carried out a trial of a new catalogue branded Argos Home in over 100 stores in the United Kingdom. This proved successful, and on 5 August 2006, it launched the second Argos Home catalogue, this time in all 200 Argos Extra stores. The catalogue only contains home furniture and styling tips for the current season. Most items displayed in the Argos Home catalogue are also available in the main catalogue too. There are occasionally new lines in the Home catalogue which may have not been available at the time the main catalogue went to print. In recent years, the stock-checkers in some stores have been modernised into a touch-screen digital display, offering more visibility on the catalogued items. Other stores continue to contain the original stock-checkers. In October 2012, Argos announced that, as of 2013, that they would be closing a number of their catalogue stores, thus fewer catalogues will be made available nationwide, after a significant profit fall, and also to boost the popularity of their online store. Claims, however, from the media that the stores themselves would change are false. ► Own brands Argos is the registered owner of a number of brands, which feature on a substantial number of products contained within the catalogue, including: Challenge, Pro Action, Visiq, Cookworks, Beanstalk, Pro Fitness, Opticom, Grosvenor, Steamworks, Aquarius, Coolworks, Elevation, Acoustic Solutions, Mega Games and the now defunct Elizabeth Duke. In January 2009, Argos also struck a deal to take over the brands Alba, Bush, and Chad Valley. In January 2015, Argos took over the rights to sell the Cherokee clothing line from Tesco. Argos credit card In August 2006, Barclays and Argos announced a joint venture to produce an Argos credit card (in the same year Barclays also joined with Thomas Cook). Argos cancelled its contract with Barclaycard and a new Argos credit card was announced in 2012, this time in conjunction with Vanquis Bank. #Argos #catalogue #homeshopping argos catalogue 2018

Argos Shoppers Set For Shopping Bonanza

01:03
The leading retailer will once again offer deals galore on thousands of products across the whole period as UK shoppers look to help themselves to a wealth of bargains in the run-up to Christmas. Falling on November 25, Black Friday, the most popular day in the shopping calendar, marks the serious start of the festive shopping season as customers take advantage of the bargains available for a little self-gifting and adopt a ‘one for you, one for me’ state of mind. Cyber Monday (November 28) also continues to be an important day for online shopping and falls on pay day for many people this year. Argos expects Black Friday to be a digital day again this year, after its website received around 12 million visits on the day itself in 2015 with customers making a staggering 18 transactions a second during peak trading periods. Over 70 per cent of all visits were from mobile and tablet devices and a quarter of total online sales were fulfilled via the newly introduced Fast Track Same-Day Delivery and Fast Track In-Store Collection services, allowing shoppers to get hold of their deals at a time to suit them. Whilst the deals remain a closely guarded secret, Argos insists that there will be some sizable discounts available on a range of technology, toys, consumer electronics and domestic appliances. John Rogers, Chief Executive Officer of Sainsbury’s Argos, said: “Last year’s Black Friday was the biggest and most successful shopping day ever for Argos. “We have been busy preparing for the Black Friday period for many months now, making sure our website, stores and distribution operations are all geared up in anticipation of high levels of demand for our great range of products. “Without doubt Black Friday and Cyber Monday have changed how people shop for Christmas in the past few years but we remain focused on making shopping easy and convenient for customers, so they can get a great deal, whether they choose to shop with us in store or online, or a combination of the two.” Argos has over 800 stores across the UK and Ireland as well as almost 30 stores in Sainsbury’s supermarkets and another 30 digital collection points in Sainsbury’s stores. Argos has recruited an additional 10,000 seasonal workers to help serve millions of customers across the festive period. On Black Friday itself, they will be joined by hundreds of head office workers helping out on the shop floor. To get the deals and top products out to stores and customers’ homes, Argos’ 11 enormous distribution centres covering a total of 5.4 million square feet of floor space will have 6,100 warehouse workers and 1,000 delivery drivers, supported by 3,000 Fast Track drivers based at local stores. High-demand products being ferried across the UK this Christmas using a fleet of 1,800 lorries and Fast Track vans include wearable tech such as Fitbit, Virtual Reality Headsets, 4K & LED TVs, X-boxes with games such as FIFA 17, and Amazon Fire Sticks, as well as a thousands of the most popular toys including Star Wars, Hatchimals, Lego and Tiny Treasures. Same-day Fast Track delivery slots will be offered to customers on a first-come, first-served basis with subsequent days’ slots offered once Black Friday’s delivery schedules are full. This year Argos expects to see a repeat of last year’s shopping patterns as customers stayed up to shop into the small hours to snap up the best deals as soon as they launched. Ten orders per second were processed between 1am and 2am (340,000 digital visits). Early bird shoppers were gaming and tech fans. By 9am, digital channels had already seen 3.2 million visits and breakfast shoppers were after computing bargains, especially laptops. Peak hour was 8am to 9am with nearly one million visits. Across the full week including Black Friday, customers visited Argos digital channels over 42 million times.

Argos How We Shop Report reveals Christmas shopping habits

03:37
2014 Christmas shopping revealed Report highlighting how our retail behaviour changes during the festive season • The average consumer plans to spend £365 on gifts this Christmas, according to research by Argos* • Most (and most frugal!) generous regions and cities across the country revealed • Consumers fusing online and in-store shopping to find Christmas stocking solutions • The How We Shop Report also charts consumer shopping behaviour throughout the year including how we buy, what we buy and when we buy The average shopper expects to spend a whopping £365 on Christmas presents this year, whether that is through pounding the pavements of the high street and retail parks or from the comfort of our own homes. That’s according to the How We Shop Report released by Argos today which looks at the changing face of shopping in the UK as we get set for the final countdown to Christmas. The most generous shoppers can be found in the North East where spend is expected to top £469 on average – while other high-spending regions include Wales (£434), Scotland (£415) and the North West (£413). The East of England (£307), South West (£312) and Yorkshire (£329) expect to spend the least. The vast majority of shoppers will be fusing traditional high street and high-tech shopping solutions as they attempt to complete their Christmas gift-buying mission over the next couple of weeks. Only 9% say they will be doing their shopping exclusively online (and not by any other means). Where we shop continues to change as 7.35 million of us are shopping from bed, almost a million others shopping on the loo and more than half a million buying in the bath. By the first week of December, less than one in ten shoppers had completed their Christmas shopping while the majority of us still have a lot left to do. A savvy 6% (some 2.8m shoppers), say they will be bagging last minute bargains by mixing and matching ways of shopping, researching and reserving items on their smart phones on the way into town and collecting in the stores at a time that suits them. Men are more likely than women to go surfing for Santa’s gifts, while almost a fifth of shoppers will be using a tablet device to get their Christmas stockings sorted this year. Value for money, wide product range, quick service, delivery options to suit needs and customer service came out as the most important things that customers are looking for from retailers, both online and in-store, this Christmas. The Argos How We Shop Report reveals our shopping habits outside of Christmas and has identified a series of shopping tribes. This includes ‘Shopping Einsteins’ who apply a military precision when it comes to shopping and ‘Digital Magpies’ who pride themselves on securing the best deals. Online shopping is now as much a part of our weekly routine as shopping in stores – four in 10 of us browse and shop online using a computer or laptop at least weekly, while 15% shop via tablet and one in ten use their mobile for shopping at least once a week.

75 Argos stores to close in digital overhaul

01:30
The digital age is creeping up on the Home Retail Group which owns the Argos business. Because they've announced a major revamp of its business to ensure that online retailers like Amazon, and others of its ilk, don't get anywhere near their profits. As a result, 75 of its 700 or so Argos stores will close over the next five years as the company moves away from distributing those famously huge, heavy catalogues every few months. With pre-tax profits for the six months to the start of September up 74% to £51.1m compared to last year, the Home Retail Group now wants Argos to quote lead 'the market growth of digital commerce through online, mobile and tablet' and offer a bigger range of goods for all. They acknowledge the market is fragile, but they reckon they're in great shape as they head up to the peak trading time of Christmas. Meanwhile, Sports Direct appears to be swimming against the tide of the general retail gloom. Just a few weeks ago, the firm bagged 20 JJB stores after it went into administration, and the firm has announced today that it's cashed in very nicely indeed on all of us sports-mad Brits during the London 2012 Olympics, and the back-to-school period. Total sales were up 18% to £402m and gross profit was up 21.7% to £167m. Written and presented by Marverine Cole.

Challenge Fan REAL REVIEW (Argos Shepherds Bush Review)

14:13
All the things you hate about shopping in Argos happen in Argos Shepherds Bush. As an ex-employee of the company I know this how a store should NOT be like. The staff do not look happy the customers are not happy, this store needs a REFIT not a REFRESH and it needs it NOW. Argos is in West 12 Shopping Centre in Shepherds Bush. The signage is still in the old 1990s-2000s type face and all but one or two windows are block laminated with a fire exit door opening up into the street. The other widows have posters, you can not see into the shop at all. The store effectively blocks out the outside light, so when inside it makes the shop dark. the windows inside looking into the shopping centre add little light as they also have posters and the catalogue stand is right up against it. When the store is busy you have to squeeze by people. The interior of this Argos is dirty and dull. The poor lighting is made worse my dirty ceiling tiles and dirty, broken, inoperable aircon ducts. The decor looks very similar to when I used to work for Argos in 2003 (The slogan then was "Brighter Prices! Brighter Shopping!") The shop still has the old catalogue stock checking system (The Uxbridge store has the shared screens that are better and work better and the Hammersmith store has just touch screens, no catalogues but there are some screens that dont work) all this looks as if the Shepherds Bush store has missed two major refits now. The store is often untidy, too few pencils and "selection sheets" to go around HORRIBLE shop. The quality of goods and service has never been good from this store. I was once kept waiting 25mins to be told the stock was wrong and was out of stock after paying, then told that the system isnt perfect (manager or supervisor I forget the job title but clearly he missed the customer service train as he said it rudely and just walked away) It was a camera tripod I bought and I was told I had to then wait for a refund in the queue of people buying.... At this point if I worked with someone that rude I would say something, but as I was the customer I though this deserved full scene. I said "No I arnt waiting in a queue again just because your stockroom manager hasnt done his job, and for the bad service you, yes YOU are giving, I suggest refunding my cash ASAP to get me out of here sooner (please note the shop was very hot and the queue was massive) he then waved at someone and said "you sort this out" I was nice to the person doing the refund and apologised how he spoke to her. (this was 2014/2015) Last summer we decided to get a ceiling fan, long story short, box had been resealed the polystyrene was broken as if it had been shoved back in the box and when fitted had to be taken down as it was unbalanced. This meant switching off the electricity and going to a different store for a replacement (always nice staff in Hammersmith) I also waited 20 mins plus for a facial sauner in a store ironically like a sauner and earphones etc etc. At this point you wonder why I shop there, well I like Argos! It is a good shop but I will only go into this one if I really really really have to. You have to actually look at what you have bought to make sure it is not a return or a badly resealed "customer view", the staff look unhappy regardless of any internal job satisfaction survey says. I do understand why Argos have this store looking the way it does, Mary Portas would be way more scathing than me so they are luck I am not in the same league as her! I suggest moving the tills to block the shopping centre windows, unblocking the street windows fixing the aircon updating the catalogue stations and call forward system. I would also suggest an external staff survey to asses what is going on and improving waiting times. Oh and cleaning the shop more regularly. I have been to so many Argos stored around the county Hull Bridlington Manchester London etc etc modern ones like in Hammermith, old ones like Bridlington but only one store ranks the lowest for customer service, stock quality, shopping experience, stock accuracy, cleanliness, tidyness and organisation and that is Argos Shepherds Bush as I write this (8/8/16) I just thought they could ban me from the store (good) from the company (bad) either way it is the truth and my experience of the shop and I put all the other stores in a positive light. I know everywhere can not be perfect but it should never be this terrible for a company doing so well.

MBNA points shopping powered by Argos

01:44
Look how slow this is. Do you think they are doing this on purpose to stop you spending your points? It's frustrating. I've contacted them many times to tell them of this slowness over the last 5 years and they keep saying it is fast on their system. Well here is the ultimate proof. Their site Vs Amazon. Says it all.
