Chinese City Review - Beijing

09:01
Beijing (formerly romanised as Peking) is the capital of the People's Republic of China and the world's third most populous city proper. It is also one of the world's most populous capital cities. The city, located in northern China, is governed as a direct-controlled municipality under the national government with 16 urban, suburban, and rural districts. Beijing Municipality is surrounded by Hebei Province with the exception of neighbouring Tianjin Municipality to the southeast; together the three divisions form the Jingjinji metropolitan region and the national capital region of China. A city combining both modern and traditional architecture, Beijing is an ever-changing megacity rich in history but also truly modern, exemplified in its extraordinary global influence in politics, business & economy, education, history, culture, language, music, sporting, architecture, civilization, fashion, art, entertainment, innovation and technology. Beijing is the second largest Chinese city by urban population after Shanghai and is the nation's political, cultural, and educational centre. It is home to the headquarters of most of China's largest state-owned companies, and is a major hub for the national highway, expressway, railway, and high-speed rail networks. The Beijing Capital International Airport has been the second busiest in the world by passenger traffic since 2010, and, as of 2016, the city's subway network is the busiest and second longest in the world, after Shanghai's subway system. The city's history dates back three millennia. As the last of the Four Great Ancient Capitals of China, Beijing has been the political centre of the country for much of the past eight centuries. With mountains surrounding the inland city on three sides, in addition to the old inner and outer city walls, Beijing was strategically poised and developed to be the residence of the emperor and thus was the perfect location for the imperial capital. Beijing was the largest city in the world by population for much of the second millennium A.D. The city is renowned for its opulent palaces, temples, parks, gardens, tombs, walls and gates, and its art treasures and universities have made it a centre of culture and art in China. Encyclopædia Britannica notes that "few cities in the world have served for so long as the political headquarters and cultural centre of an area as immense as China." Beijing has seven UNESCO World Heritage Sites – the Forbidden City, Temple of Heaven, Summer Palace, Ming Tombs, Zhoukoudian, as well as parts of the Great Wall and the Grand Canal, all popular locations for tourism. siheyuans, the city's traditional housing style, and hutongs, the narrow alleys between siheyuans, are common in urban Beijing and are also major tourist attractions. The city hosted the 2008 Summer Olympics and was chosen to host the 2022 Winter Olympics, which will make it the first city to ever host both events. Many of Beijing's 91 universities consistently rank among the best in China, of which Peking University and Tsinghua University are ranked in the top 60 universities in the world. In 2015, 52 companies of the Fortune Global 500 company headquarters were located in Beijing, more than any other city in the world, including state-owned enterprises State Grid, China National Petroleum, and Sinopec Group, ranked 2nd, 3rd, and 4th, respectively. Beijing CBD is quickly becoming the center for Beijing's economic expansion, rapid modernization, and radically changing skyline, with the ongoing or recently completed construction of multiple skyscrapers. Beijing's Zhongguancun area is also known as China's Silicon Valley, China's center of innovation and technology entrepreneurship. According to the 2016 InterNations Expat Insider Survey, Beijing ranked first in Asia in the subcategory "Personal Finance Index," a measure of expats' salaries versus cost of living in the city. Expats live primarily in the east, in urban districts such as Dongcheng and Chaoyang, or in suburban districts such as Shunyi. Let's take a proper look at Beijing, the Capital city of China... Walking in Guangzhou China on Beijing Road Shopping District

05:41
The entire street stretches from the Zhongshan Wu Lu to Huifu Lu. The total stretch covers an approximate distance of 440 meters with around 138 stores on both sides of the street. The stores sell everything from clothes and shoes to accessories, general merchandise, jewelry and even food. Beware of pickpockets, and hassled by people trying to sell t shirts, watches etc etc what I did is offer them 10RMB (£1) for anything they try to sell me which made them go away.

23 Story Electronics Market in China 😱 Better than Alibaba?? Guangzhou wholesale mall sourcing

Click the red subscribe button if you like this video – follow for a new travel video every week. MORE IN THE DESCRIPTION ⬇️ Visiting China? I wrote up some things you should know before going -- http://livinthatlife.com/china-travel-guide/ Chinese wholesale market/mall w 23 Floors. Yes. It's real. It felt like walking thru Alibaba .com lol... I think a lot of the sellers in here are just wholesalers who take orders from sites like Aliexpress.com, alibaba.com, globalsources.com and other wholesale sites around the world.. bc they are always packing up boxes ...... well everywhere around the outskirts of the city of Guangzhou all you see are people moving boxes around haha..... was this better than just scouting for new product ideas on Alibaba.com? Not sure.. sometimes you can get lucky and find that amazingly cool thing.. but that can happen online too.... nonetheless it was a good experience to try out and see what the wholesale scene it all about. ...then we get a bite of some Chinese food, and end it with a preview of the next video, nightlife at O2 club at Party Pier.. click to watch next! CHINA: BEIJING: FASHION & CHINESE SHOES

02:48
Mandarin/Nat Once a trademark of China's revolution, the blue button-up Mao suits are all but gone in Beijing. The matching caps are also scarce. But one piece of the old communist uniform survives - the shoes. Trendy young Chinese have turned Beijing's popular downtown shopping centre into a fashion flashpoint. Blue Mao suits and traditional Chinese shoes seem to have been consigned to history. Instead, fashionable leather shoes, trainers and platform shoes have taken over Chinese streets. But in some neighbourhoods, the fashion for traditional Chinese shoes lives on. In Beijing's old quarter of Qianhai, retired people lounge around in the black cloth slip-ons - known as Buxies - playing cards under the trees. While the blue suits and caps evoke communist imagery, the cloth shoes transcend the stereotype. Some Buxie fans say the shoes are alive - the longer you wear them, the better the shoes learn to fit your feet. Seventy-six-year-old Zhang Li says they're still the best for coping with the unforgiving concrete and tile sidewalks of Beijing. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) "These shoes are just comfortable, casual. You can't compare them with other shoes, they are different. Old people particularly like to wear these shoes." SUPER CAPTION: Zhang Li With many still loyal to the traditional cloth shoes, manufacturers at the renowned Neiliangshan shoe store are not afraid of the competition. This shop is one of the oldest and largest cloth shoe makers, in operation since 1853. Inside the shop, pictures display customers past and present - among them late premier Zhao Enlai, and Chairman Mao Tse-Tung. Traditionally Buxies are made by hand. Shoemakers stitch together soles and padded cotton, often adding fleece for winter wear. The process can take several few hours. In the past, a woman who could not master this craft was considered unfit for marriage. Today, several factories are producing shoes to keep up with demand. The manager says he's confident that people will always wear his shoes, because they're part of Chinese culture. SOUNDBITE: (Mandarin) "These kind of shoes are the old shoes of the Chinese nation. Our great leaders are the same as the people, we are all wearing the same shoes." SUPER CAPTION: Cheng Laixiang, General Manager of Neiliangsheng Shoe Store So it seems, for the time being at least, the traditional cloth shoes will continue to pound the pavements and ride the rickshaws of Beijing. Chinese Shopping Mall 101: Xidan District, Beijing

02:01
In Beijing, one of the most famous shopping districts is called Xidan. Xidan is host to large indoor malls that have eight to nine (sometimes more and sometimes less) vertical levels stacked one on top of each other and filled with various little boutiques featuring an assortment of clothing styles. These boutiques, each about the size of a one-bedroom, are squished between one another on a single floor and often managed by one to two people who are in charge of haggling with customers. "Haggling," or the art of buying and selling through persuasive techniques, was one of the first things I learned about when I was in China. In the United States, when you walk into a department store and pick something out, you have to pay the price on the tag. There is no exception, and not many people give it much thought; there is a clear acceptance of the market price. In China, however, it's a whole 'nother story. In shopping malls like these, one is able to negotiate with the seller to lower the price. Because there are so many boutiques selling similar items, there is a great deal of competition among all of the sellers for a buyer's attention (and ultimately, money). So, if a buyer wants to purchase something from a seller, they can take advantage of the competitive atmosphere between the sellers and haggle the price down. Proper step-by-step haggling techniques include the following: 1. Ask for the price on an item that you see but feign interest in (the most interested you are in the item, the more leverage the seller has in keeping up the price) 2. Initially, nonchalantly ask for a lower price, like 50% less than what the seller has told you (so if the seller asks for 100 yuan, the equivalent to USD $16, for an item, you can say, "I'll give you 50 yuan, or $8, for it." [[Fun fact: in the marketplace of buying and selling yuan and kuai mean the same thing, but many sellers use the term "kuai" instead of the proper term for the currency which is "yuan." Sometimes you will also hear the term "quian," which is the Mandarin term for "money."]] 3. The seller will look at you with utter disapproval and perhaps even slight disgust (it's all a game of facial expressions and wit, I tell you!) and probably say something along the lines of "No way, Jose," and then stick with the original, inflated price. [[Fun fact: One thing also important to keep in mind is that if you are a foreigner in China, most sellers will increase the price of a good 2-3 times its initial rate because they think you have more money than the average Chinese customer. Because of this stereotype, foreign folks should be more willing to haggle down the price to get their monies worth. If you feel uncomfortable haggling, bring along a friend who is well trained in it, and it'll make things a lot easier. I speak from experience.]] 4. If the price the seller gives you a second time isn't something that you want to pay (or is a price that, in your opinion, isn't equivalent to the actual value of the good), shake your head and walk away from the item and the booth itself. **This "walk-away/ I'm-not-interested-anymore" technique works on many occasions; the seller than yells a lower price at your back as you walk away, or chases after you to ask for another round of negotiation. At this point, you can either re-engage with the seller in the "haggle" dance, or move on and continue your shopping spree at another boutique. At the end of the day, you have a choice in what price you pay for the good you're interested in. Mastering the art of haggling will help you pay less for more stuff and get your money's worth in Chinese markets. As for me, I could never properly haggle due to my poor Chinese language skills and my inability to play the game or dance the dance. Thankfully, I was behind the camera the entire time, so I could merely observe instead of engage. It was a lot easier this way. Special thanks to my fellow exchange students in this video for embarking on this awesome adventure with me! #NewExperiencesForDayz #GilmanScholarship #BeijingChina

Hong Kong textile vendors reluctant to move to new fashion centre

05:11
Subscribe to our YouTube channel here: https://sc.mp/2kAfuvJ For more than 40 years, Yen Chow Street Hawker Bazaar in Hong Kong’s Sham Shui Po district has been the go-to place for fashion designers and students looking for cheap and original material and accessories. In its heyday, the wholesale and retail hub, also known as “Pang Chai,” had nearly 190 stalls offering a wide variety of textiles and fabrics. But in October 2017, the Hong Kong government announced plans to redevelop the market into residential buildings and move vendors into a modern fashion centre in 2023. The South China Morning Post spoke to vendors who have spent decades in “Pang Chai” and are reluctant to relocate.
Evening Spring/Summer 2017 at Fashion Now, Beijing

Evening Yu combines fashion with art, and this season she hinted to us that this is only the beginning... With a collection entitled "Tip of the Iceberg", she may or may not have been hinting at the fact that she's only given us a taste of what she is capable of. Her work is akin to sculpture, although more malleable and flexible than traditional materials such as stone and metal. Her studio is in the 798 art district in Beijing, a proper home for such an artistic designer. We are STOKED to see what the future holds for Evening!! 798 Arts District | 2018 APA Awards

02:47
PIERRE L’ENFANT INTERNATIONAL PLANNING EXCELLENCE AWARD 798 Arts District Sasaki — Beijing, China https://www.planning.org/awards/2018/798arts/ Historically, China's state-owned factories were identified by a number. Once a facility that manufactured weapons components, the 798 factory and surrounding industrial district is now the epicenter of an emerging arts community, formally recognized by the City of Beijing in 2006 as an arts district. The 798 Arts District Vision Plan was the brainchild of an unlikely partnership between a government-led consortium that oversees the pension fund for former factory workers and a Belgian philanthropist with a passion for contemporary Chinese art. Together, they sought to repurpose the district as a stable source of revenue while solidifying its place as an influential force in China's arts scene. Over the course of a decade, the factory buildings have been transformed into new museums, galleries, and cafes. Previously hidden courtyards and vacant lots are now settings for outdoor sculptures, fashion shows, and other cultural events. What began as a small collection of studios and work spaces has evolved to become the third most visited destination in Beijing, behind the Forbidden City and the Great Wall.

RELAY FASHION TALK: Nicole Chen and Jeff Staples in Beijing (Part 4/6)

09:43
NC.STYLE CEO Nicole Chen and Staple Design Creative Director Jeff Staples had a dialogue around the topic of creativity of Designs and the importance of Brand Marketing on Friday 26th of October 2012. The Relay talk took place in the CHIC-Young Blood exhibition in popular Art district 798. The dialogue was done in bilingual English and Chinese where Nicole Chen was speaking in Chinese and Jeff Staples in English. A list of questions was asked to both Nicole Chen and Jeff Staples. See below for a summary for the content: 1. Can a designer brand collaborate with other brands? Nicole Chen thoughts on this questions was that it is not a problem for 2 brands to collaborate together, as a matter of fact, Nicole Chen gave the example of Y-3 and Adidas which is a strong collaboration between a sports brand and the fashion designer Yohji Yamamoto. She has a strong knowledge about these types of collaboration as she has been working with Y-3 for over 7 years. She also took Jeff Staples as a good example and explained how it is important that the brand should be mature enough on its own before considering to entering in partnerships with another brand. 2. How does a brand become wanted by consumers? Nicole Chen and Jeff Staples talk about their mutual experience where marketing and promotional activities only became important 5 years after the brand was launched. They fully agree with each other. For a brand to become wanted by consumers, the importance lies in the unique style and brand concept and it should be created to be strong from the beginning. As soon as the strong base is built, then marketing work can start. It is important to give the consumer a quality product. Nicole Chen explains that it is also one of the values of NC.STYLE to provide excellent services to its clients. 3. According to your experience, how should a designer brand collaborate with a well establish brand? Nicole Chen explains that in the majority of cases, famous brands will look to collaborate with designer brands because they are doing a very unique and outstanding work and is very common to happen overseas. But unfortunately in China, this doesn't really happen because China is lacking fashion platform where designers, young designers and established brands can meet. According to Nicole Chen, it will take time before famous Chinese brands would consider collaborated with young brands. As an example, Nicole Chen mentioned SLVR, the collaboration between adidas and a designer how is not very famous but highly talented. The recent phenomenon happening is a foreign brand wanting to collaborate with young Chinese designers. 4. How should Young designer brands get through common difficulties such as designs, brand promotion and development? With Nicole Chen's knowledge in marketing and brand image development, she talks about the difficulties linked with running a brand and having to manage staff, financial and business decisions as well as the time and energy that one has to invest in the project. Having a strong experience of the western fashion industry, she explains the importance of Trade shows and how it contributes to the development a new young brand and therefore it a great opportunity for starting designers. She explains that unfortunately in China there are very few trade shows which are a big problem for the development of the fashion industry in China. CHIC YOUNG-BLOOD is the only trade show providing these opportunities and it's a great start. For more information about NC.STYLE please visit www.ncstyle.com.cn
