The Dead Sea is drying up at an alarming rate

01:21
The Dead Sea has already lost more than one third of its surface area over the years. The water level is currently dropping by over 1 meter every year and its shoreline is expected to drop from 411 meters to 430 meters below sea level by 2020, according to the environmentalist group EcoPeace Middle East. Traditionally, the Jordan River is the Dead Sea’s inflow source. However, 50 years ago it was diverted to supply cities, reducing the water inflow level to the Dead Sea to just 5% of its original volume. The hot and dry climate of the region makes it difficult for the Dead Sea to restore itself. That added to the rapid loss of water has resulted in the increased salinity of the lake. The group also points out that the Dead Sea is threatened by cosmetic companies that extract mineral water from the region to make beauty products. Hotels and attractions built along the shoreline also release untreated sewage into the Dead Sea. Even though the Dead Sea does not have any wildlife in itself, the region around it is known for supporting several endangered species such as ibexes, leopards and the indigenous Dead Sea Sparrow. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Next Animation Studio’s News Direct service provides daily, high-quality, informative 3D news animations that fill in for missing footage and help viewers understand breaking news stories or in-depth features on science, technology, and health. Week 9: Ein Gedi & Dead Sea

04:05
Join me on a trip to Ein Gedi, as well as the Dead Sea (the lowest point on planet Earth)! The day started off with a multi-hour hike at Ein Gedi, followed by a visit to the beach to float in salty waters of the Dead Sea. We also saw Masada from the bus while en route. JORDAN DIARIES | Day 1 | Madaba - Mount Nebo - Dead Sea | Road Trip in Jordan

06:06
Jordan, an Arab nation on the east bank of the Jordan River, is defined by ancient monuments, nature reserves and seaside resorts. It’s home to the famed archaeological site of Petra, the Nabatean capital dating to around 300 B.C. Set in a narrow valley with tombs, temples and monuments carved into the surrounding pink sandstone cliffs, Petra earns its nickname, the "Rose City." Madaba is an ancient town in Jordan, southwest of the capital Amman. It’s known for its 6th-century mosaic map of the Holy Land in the Greek Orthodox Church of St. George. The Madaba Archaeological Park preserves the mosaic-rich Church of the Virgin Mary and artifacts from the Hellenistic, Roman, Byzantine and Islamic eras. Northwest, the biblical hill of Mount Nebo overlooks the Jordan Valley and the Dead Sea. Mount Nebo is an elevated ridge in Jordan, approximately 710 metres above sea level, mentioned in the Hebrew Bible as the place where Moses was granted a view of the Promised Land. The view from the summit provides a panorama of the Holy Land and, to the north, a more limited one of the valley of the River Jordan. The Dead Sea – bordering Israel, the West Bank and Jordan – is a salt lake whose banks are more than 400m below sea level, the lowest point on dry land. Its famously hypersaline water makes floating easy, and its mineral-rich black mud is used for therapeutic and cosmetic treatments at area resorts. The surrounding desert offers many oases and historic sites.

Dead Sea - Touring Israel

02:15
The Dead Sea "Sea of Salt", also called the Salt Sea, is a salt lake bordering Jordan to the east, and Palestine and Israel to the west. Its surface and shores are 427 metres (1,401 ft) below sea level,Earth's lowest elevation on land. The Dead Sea is 306 m (1,004 ft) deep, the deepest hypersaline lake in the world. With 34.2% salinity (in 2011), it is also one of the world's saltiest bodies of water. It is 9.6 times as salty as the ocean. This salinity makes for a harsh environment in which animals cannot flourish, hence its name. The Dead Sea is 31 miles long and 9 miles wide at its widest point. It lies in the Jordan Rift Valley, and its main tributary is the Jordan River. www.maranathatours.com

Dead Sea shrinkage predicts future mega drought

06:34
(21 Jun 2017) LEADIN: Scientists in Jordan say a mega drought that devastated the Middle East thousands of years ago is set to return. Evidence found inside bubbles trapped in salt below the Dead Sea predicts another mega drought heading for the area at some point during this century. The findings point to a bleak future for the Middle East where the water in the Dead Sea watershed that is currently used by Israel, Palestine and Jordan might vanish completely. STORYLINE: The air vibrates with heat along the lowest point on Earth 430 metres or 1,412 feet deep below sea level. This is the shoreline of the Dead Sea near the Wadi Zarqa Ma'in canyon in Amman, Jordan. The water glitters in the hot sun, the shores are rimmed with sharp salt crystals. But the salt lake is slowly shrinking – losing a metre of depth a year – as climate change and human water consumption deplete its resources. Geologists from Jordan, Israel and the United States are collecting preliminary samples from ravines and waterfalls across the eastern shore of the Dead Sea. Ancient clues buried in mud, rock and salt just might help these scientists learn more about the future of this area - that many believe will likely be even more arid than it is today. While the western side of the Dead Sea in Israel is well-studied. The team here hopes to fill in what they describe as "the blank map" of Jordan with geological data that can help them explain when and how the Dead Sea has grown in the past. Yael Kiro, a geochemist at the Columbia University Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory says: "We want to learn what's going on in the Dead Sea in terms of how much water from the eastern side and what is the composition of water and what is the composition of sediments. We can't understand without this the changes that we see in the Dead Sea and therefore we can't understand the climate without knowing what is going on here." Kiro lead a Dead Sea drilling project in 2010 along with fellow geologists, Moti Stein and Stephen Goldstein. A floating drill discovered evidence of cyclical growth and shrinkage of the salt lake. At times it stretched to the Golan Heights; other times mega droughts devastated the watershed and drove the Dead Sea 100 metres deeper than it is today. When water flows downhill it carries with it soil, salt, trees and other detritus like animal carcasses. Over thousands of years this material forms layers coloured by its contents – ashen white for dry summers and dark grey for fertile winters. Geologists can read the history in these bands of colour – and use sophisticated laboratory experiments to discover intricate details of changes of climate 200,000 years ago until today. "Now we are with our partners and colleagues from Columbia University to study and sample different water resources from the eastern part of the Dead Sea and besides that we are sampling rocks and different soil profiles to see any indicators of the paleoclimate which is the climate thousands of years ago to have a clear idea about what was the climate, what is the climate now, and then we can forecast the future climate of the Dead Sea area," says Marwan al-Raggad, a hydrologist at the University of Jordan. "Our main objective is to study the climate in the area and to see how the climate affects the Dead Sea and for sure if the climate is affecting the Dead Sea it will affect the ecosystem it will effect the whole community of the area in the Middle East and Northern Africa areas that is contributing to the Dead Sea areas." Goldstein is a geochemist at the Lamont-Doherty Earth Observatory at Columbia University. He has studied the Dead Sea for 30 years. Dead Sea Marathon (half marathon race guide & pro advice)

16:24
Early this February I ran the Dead Sea half marathon, part of 4 races around this unmissable, salty wonder of the natural world in Israel. It was a welcome break from the freezing cold UK at that time! The 10k, Half Marathon, Marathon and Ultra are all flat, out and back courses around the earth’s saltiest, lowest lake at -400m altitude. This film covers my experience of the race (in a nutshell, it was smashing!) then I chat to some Israeli runners, foreign runners and pros about how they found it, and get some advice from them about how best to train. Enter here! https://deadsea.run/en/ My race report of the 2019 Dead Sea Half Marathon: https://wordpress.com/post/wildgingerrunning.co.uk/1267 A hazey, orange ball of burning sun snuck up behind the dusty-pink mountains across a sea like polished glass. Runners cruised past silhouetted against the ever brightening horizon. This was the start of the Dead Sea Half Marathon and it was breathtaking in both senses of the word. As soon as we turned off the road from Ein Bokek and hit the stoney gravel track, we were treated to a salty Dead Sea shoreline that mimicked snow, with white, salt jetties and perfectly circular salt islands as far as you could see. In this friendly atmosphere we cheered on the winners and faster runners coming back towards us on the left. Mid-way, a DJ and dancer cheered us on, moving wildly to energising, thumping techno. Once past the turnaround point, we encouraged each other. I tried out my hastily-plane-learned Hebrew on my companions. Coll ha ka vod - well done, and Tam shicho - keep going everyone. Fingers crossed I said it right... As the end drew closer I became more and more thankful for the early start and frequent water stations. Israel wasn’t Costa Rica hot at this time of the year, but running in the mid-20’s from snowy Britain definitely felt cosy! The finish was along the Ein Bokek beach front past palm trees, big white hotels & the new Dead Sea Mall. Thumping techno music (they love a good beat here in Israel!) signalled the end of the race, with happy, sweaty runners triumphantly sprinting through the finish banner and collecting well-earned medals. This was a really lovely race - no hills and no great variety of trail terrain but the beautiful, out-of-this world views of mountain, sea and salt are more than enough. This is a bucket list event if ever there was one. Enter here! https://deadsea.run/en/ Finally, a dip in the Dead Sea at the end is a fantastic way to soothe hot, aching feet MAZEL TOF everyone who ran the Dead Sea 10k, Half, Marathon or Ultra! I loved it! Thank you to the organisers Ophir and Zoli for inviting me and showing me the fantastic trails nearby (to com in a future film very soon, stay tuned!) Irina for showing me Masada, Jerusalem, the Ein Gedi waterfalls and Tel Aviv, and Alena from Russia Running for her great training advice. ----- Wild Ginger Running is a YouTube channel dedicated to bringing you the best advice and gear reviews for trail & ultra running, created by me, Claire Maxted, co-founder and former editor of Trail Running magazine UK. Who Lives at the Bottom of the Bermuda Triangle?

09:11
There is one special place that simultaneously terrifies and has unexplainable pull: 300 ships gone missing, 75 aircrafts never found; you're right, that's all about the Bermuda Triangle. Few people are aware of what the life is like at the bottom of the Bermuda Triangle – are you ready to meet the most shocking and scary creatures ever? Dragonfish live at the staggering depth of 5 to 7 thousand feet. This fish looks quite terrifying, with its black coloring and the light it produces on its own. Unlike other deep-water inhabitants, dragonfish produces light in the infrared range while the blue and green range is what other fish stick to. Vampire Squid has the largest eyes in terms of proportions in the world and is born to live in the depth. These animals are also covered with photophores which distract predators and lure prey. The mouth of the gulper eel is loosely hinged which makes it extremely wide and big. In fact, the length of the jaw of the eel reaches one-fourth of the length of their body. Despite being the owner of an enormous mouth, the gulper eel has tiny teeth, and this means that it isn't supposed to prey on large animals. The Goblin Shark reaches 13 ft in size and is also called the Vampire Shark due to the fact that it avoids light at all cost. Due to this feature, you can see the shark in its natural habitat only if you go as deep as 890 to 4300 ft. Pharynx, a complex feeding apparatus that helps Eunice Aphroditois catch the prey, can turn inside out, not unlike glove fingers. It has strong and extremely sharp mandibles which can easily cut the prey in half due to the strength and speed of the worm's attack. These are just some of the creatures that lurk in the depth of the Bermuda Triangle. Who knows what other unbelievable horror-movie beasts we can meet there? Nobody knows for sure what makes crafts disappear in this area. -Dragonfish looks quite terrifying, with its black coloring and the light it produces on its own in case of danger. -The Vampire Squid has is bright red eyes and crimson cloak that looks like webbing. In case of a threat, these creatures can invert their skin exposing their spines. -The pouch-like structure of the lower jaw allows the eel to deposit its prey there. Even the stomach of the eel can stretch so much that the creature can hold there a huge amount of food. -The Goblin Shark reaches 13 ft in size and is also called the Vampire Shark due to the fact that it avoids light at all cost. As soon as the prey appears in the vicinity, the jaw of the shark will elongate and grab it. -The worm buries itself in the seafloor with just a fraction of its body exposed. It has five antennae it uses to sense the prey. Visit Sea of Galilee, Kinneret, Lake of Gennesaret, Lake Tiberias, Lake in Israel

01:41
The Sea of Galilee, also Kinneret, Lake of Gennesaret, or Lake Tiberias (Hebrew: יָם כִּנֶּרֶת, Judeo-Aramaic: יַמּא דטבריא, Arabic: بحيرة طبريا‎), is the largest freshwater lake in Israel, and it is approximately 53 km (33 mi) in circumference, about 21 km (13 mi) long, and 13 km (8.1 mi) wide. The lake has a total area of 166.7 km2 (64.4 sq mi) at its fullest, and a maximum depth of approximately 43 m (141 feet).[3] At levels between 215 metres (705 ft) and 209 metres (686 ft) below sea level,[4] it is the lowest freshwater lake on Earth and the second-lowest lake overall (after the Dead Sea, a saltwater lake).[5] The lake is fed partly by underground springs although its main source is the Jordan River which flows through it from north to south. Masada, Ein Gedi and the Dead Sea - The ultimate guide to the Judaean Desert

12:43
A complete guide to visiting Masada, the Dead Sea, Ein Gedi and Qumran. This video will show you all you need to know about the main sites in the Judaean Desert. Here’s what this video is about: Masada: How do you get there? A brief history of Masada and information about the best way to see Masada – an unknown trail that surrounds Masada. The Dead Sea is one of the wonders of the world. It is the lowest point on earth and you can float on its dense salty waters! Where are the best beaches and what do you need to be aware of? Ein Gedi is a national park that is home to two spring-fed streams with drinkable water that flow all year round - Nahal David and Nahal Arugot. A visit to Ein Gedi combines history – there is an ancient, 6,000-year-old temple, and a beautiful synagogue with a mosaic floor – and wildlife – there are plants that originally come from Africa, and you get to see animals including the ibex and the rock hyrax. Ein Gedi is perfect for those who love hiking. Most visitors go for two to three hours, but there are also longer full-day treks. Qumran is a small archeological site. I describe it as the most important unimpressive site in the world. The site is hardly spectacular in itself, but in order to understand it you need to look at the cliffs all around and know the history of the place. The Dead Sea scrolls were found in the caves set in the cliffs around Qumran. This is one of the most important archeological finds in Israel and the world. The Dead Sea Is In Grave Danger (1996)

13:38
Killing the Dead Sea (1996): A report on the environmental dangers faced by the Dead sea. Subscribe to Journeyman here: http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=journeymanpictures# Synopsis: In the last 40 years the sea level of the Dead Sea has sunk 16 metres, leaving behind white, salty residues on the sandy shore. Ecologist Gidon Bromberg believes industry and over-development may have robbed the sea of its chance to rejuvenate. For years, the shimmering waves and oases of palm trees have provided a natural spa tourists. Lured by the therapeutic benefits of low humidity and oxygen rich air, they can float in the water and read books or cover themselves in black mud to soak up the medicinal effects. But as new international hotels spring up, Bromberg laments the lack of co-operative strategy between Jordan and Israel. He says, "there is no holistic plan" and worries that industrial mineral plants on both sides of the sea continue to drain the basin. If there is still hope of hydrating the patchy ground and sandy shelves surrounding the sea, then development of this historical and geographical treasure must be properly controlled. Zahi Shaked A tour guide in Israel and his camera [email protected] +972- 54-6905522 tel 0546905522 מורה דרך מדריך תיירים ישראל tour guide in Israel The beach at the Dead Sea offers you the natural qualities that are unique to this area. Mineral beach is located on the northern Dead Sea, is open all year around and provides you a beautiful surrounding and facilities that are perfect for pleasure and relaxation. You also take advantage of the health benefits of the Dead Sea. The air, the low atmosphere, the view and the wonderful sun gives you many hours of pleasurable vacation. The staff is meticulous about keeping the beach clean and tidy. There are wide shades, chairs and tables for the use of the visitor. The beach is quite an amazing place. You see the blue sea and hear the splash of the waves against the intensity of the Judean Mountains in the west and the mountains of Moab in the east. Sulphur Water Pool (Thermo-mineral) The pool water comes directly from natural sulphur springs 500 meters south of the facility. Spring water comes from the depths of the earth in a natural and constant temperature of 42 degrees centigrade and goes into the pool at a temperature of about 39 degrees. Dipping in the pool contributes to relaxation and tranquility. Natural Medical Mud On the beach you can use natural mud for your pleasure.. Some claim that the fine mud improves and strengthens the hair roots, stimulates blood circulation and the renewal of skin cells.

ROAD TO DEAD SEA || INDIAN IN ISRAEL

03:20
Hello Friends Welcome to My Youtube Channel I visited this place 2 years back and now I want to share my experience with you guys but first let's start with some facts. The Dead Sea – bordering Israel, the West Bank, and Jordan – is a salt lake whose banks are more than 400m below sea level, the lowest point on dry land. Its famously hypersaline water makes floating easy, and its mineral-rich black mud is used for therapeutic and cosmetic treatments at area resorts. The surrounding desert offers many oases and historic sites. PLEASE ••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••••• SUBSCRIBE. LIKE. COMMENTS. Sea of Stars - Vaadhoo Island, Maldives

02:41
As night falls on certain beaches around the world, the waves glow with an eerie blue light, neon dots that make it look as though stars are washing up on shore. What you’re seeing is actually millions of microscopic organisms called bioluminescent phytoplankton. Some of the most spectacular photographs have been captured from one location, Vaadhoo island, Maldives, which has been nick named the sea of stars. The Maldives is a tropical nation in the Indian Ocean composed of 26 ring-shaped atolls, which are made up of more than 1,000 coral islands. A Travel Guide to Jordan

07:02
A Travel Guide to Jordan Jordan is an extraordinary country. Although small in size and young in terms of nation state, it is blessed with some of the regions most revered historical treasures, some of its most spectacular scenery and some of its kindest and most hospitable people. It has a delicious cuisine, a good tourist infrastructure – with some great accommodation and knowledgeable guides – and under the much respected royal family, a stable government. Throughout its short history, Jordan has bucked the trends of its neighbours; by welcoming the foreign traveller with open arms, and gallons of sweet mint tea, in many ways it continues to do so. Amman is a lively, liberal city, modern in character, yet with one foot rooted firmly in the past. With a history dating back to Neolithic times, its journey travels through the Greeks and Romans – when it was known as Philadelphia, the City of Brotherly Love’ – before being abandoned for almost a thousand years only to rise again in 1921 as the country’s modern capital. Today it carries an air of dynamic self-assurance, and is an easy place to hang out for a day or two. Things not to be missed are the downtown area, the fruit and vegetable market, the Roman theatre, and the citadel with the capital’s most famous monument, the Temple of Hercules. From Amman the first thing you might like to do is take a day trip to visit the country’s most famous Roman town, Jaresh. Although Palaeolithic and Neolithic settlements can be found nearby, the town came to prominence during in the 1st century AD. Sites to check out here are the Temple of Zeus, the South Theatre and its impressive, and renovated, Hippodrome – which has seen a revival of the Roman sport of chariot racing. Travelling south you’ll pass Mount Nebo, the site from which Moses showed his people the Promised Land and take a look around Madaba, where, among other things, on the floor of St George’s church you can see the first map of the Holy Land in the form of a wonderful mural. But Jordan isn’t just about sites of antiquity, it also has some stunning natural wonders to experience. Just to the east of Madaba you can go for a float in the Dead Sea – and, if you so desire, cover yourself in the rejuvenating mud, or treat yourself to a spa or swim at one of the regions smart 5 star hotels – before enjoying remote, offbeat locations like the tiny village of Dana, which has recently been reinvented as an eco-village for travellers looking to explore the nearby reserve. While most people enter Petra from the town of Wadi Musa, through the famous Siq, or narrow gorge, emerging at the Treasury, there is another route in. Taking the rarely used back entrance not only offers a spectacular walk, through the regions beautifully rugged terrain, it also means you avoid the crowds and start your tour of the amazing Pink City at the impressive Monastery, and thus save the Treasury till last. And what a site Petra is – truly one of the wonders of the world. Covering some 250 square kilometres, the former capital of the Nabateans simply astounds. The beautiful pink rock, carved into magnificent facades showcasing the noble family’s temples and tombs, divided by mighty canyons and gorges, really does leave you speechless. At one time the city was home to some 30,000 inhabitants and the scale of the place is mind-blowing. And finally you come to the most impressive of all the Petra sites, the famous Treasury, which simply has to be one of the most magnificent monuments ever created. This is simply one of the most majestic desert landscapes you are ever likely to witness, a place where orange sands drift against towering red cliffs and immense vistas ride out under vast desert skies. This is a great place to stay for the night, either sleeping wild under the stars or in one of the impressive camps, the best of which is almost certainly Discover Circle, Bedu Camp. And as dramatic as it is, Wadi Rum has been used as a location in a numerous famous movies. And finally right in the south is the Red Sea town of Aqaba, which as well as being an important port and modern beach resort for locals, also has its place in history. With plenty of good walks to be had, horse riding holidays to experience, even great diving in the Red Sea, Jordan also has its fair share of activities to enjoy. At the Feynan Eco Resort it has an award winning ethical hotel, at Karak and Shobak it has Crusader castles and in the Azraq Wetlands it offers some amazing birdwatching.
