Shoji and kumiko patterns - 03 Making a shoji Part 1

14:41
This is Part 1 of the Making a shoji video. While this is quite a simple shoji, the processes involved in making a traditional shoji such as this are quite involved. Accurate marking is one of the key factors in making a quality shoji, and in Part 1 I cover the steps in marking the stiles, vertical tsukeko and vertical kumiko in preparation for cutting the mortises to house the kumiko tenons. This shoji is made in the traditional style, and is a scaled down version of the kind of shoji you would find in any Japanese home. This is certainly not a shoji that you can bash together in a hurry with minimal effort. A good understanding of the concepts and processes I cover in this video and other part in this Making a shoji will lay the foundations for making much more complex shoji and tackling the kumiko patterns I introduce in later videos. My book — Shoji and Kumiko Design, Book 1 - The Basics (ISBN 978-0-9872583-0-4) — covers all these processes and many other aspects of shoji and Japanese woodworking in considerable detail. The minimum timber needed for the shoji in this video is: Two stiles 30.5 x 30.5 x 850 mm Two rails 45 x 29 x 350 mm Three tsukeko 16 x 6.5 x 700 mm Three vertical kumiko 15 x 4 x 700 mm Five horizontal kumiko 14 x 4 x 330 mm.

Japanese Scale Picking Patterns

03:20
Get exotic with the Japanese Pentatonic Scale! Learn these 5 box positions and 3 bonus diagonal patterns to help you connect up the shapes and get your fingers all over the fretboard. There really isn't much to be found on the internet regarding this scale. And so I was forced to make these 5 box positions myself + the 3 diagonal connective shapes. Not only is there very little info to be found on these scales, I couldn't even find sources which agreed on its proper name. The closest I came was that this is perhaps called the "Han Kumoi" scale in A. Follow me on facebook www.facebook.com/AlfredPotterGuitar www.AlfredPotter.com

A Japanese Method to Develop Creativity in Kids

09:17
Subscribe to Bright Side : https://goo.gl/rQTJZz For copyright matters please contact us at: [email protected] ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Japanese people are known for their intelligence, politeness, and wellness. Why is this nation so unique and different from the rest of the world? It seems we’ve found the answer – they have an incredibly cool education system and unique teaching methods! Watch till the end – there is a small but brilliant bonus for you. Let’s start with a unique Japanese method in the schools for developing creativity in kids. We believe that the whole world needs to adopt! It’s called “Nameless paints.” Japanese designers named Yusuke Imai and Ayami Moteki created an unusual set to teach kids colors and painting. This fantastic set won the 2012 Kokuyo Design Award. Let’s see how it works. “Nameless paints” includes ten tubes that don’t have color names such as “yellow,” “blue,” or “green.” Instead, there are only spots of a particular color or colors on each tube. As you can see, the spots are also different sizes. The designers’ aim is to change the way kids think and learn. They want children to understand what shade they will get if they mix certain colors. For instance, a child looks at the tube with two spots: pink and blue. He doesn’t know what color hides inside. He squeezes the tube and gets… purple color! So, as a result, the kid learns that the same amounts of pink and blue paints create purple. Here’s another example – a tube with a big blue spot and small pink one. It means if you mix a small amount of the pink color and a large amount of the blue color, you’ll get dark-blue color. Interesting, right? As you can see, each tube hides a particular color inside. Pink, yellow, blue, purple, red, dark green, dark blue, orange, light-green, and black. However, to get one of these shades, the child should think about which colors create it. As a result, they learn how to create new colors and how to mix them. It’s an easy and fun way to understand the color theory. Recent studies have shown that free thinking is an attribute that a person can acquire over time, and the schools play the most important part in developing creativity. Now, here’s the bonus – 10 brilliant features of the Japanese education system the whole world needs to adopt. The success of the Japanese culture is very simple: they put a lot of effort and time in the education system trying to make it not only useful but also fun. ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Our Social Media: Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/brightside/ Instagram: https://www.instagram.com/brightgram/ 5-Minute Crafts Youtube: https://www.goo.gl/8JVmuC  ---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- For more videos and articles visit: http://www.brightside.me/

Yayoi Kusama – Obsessed with Polka Dots

07:24
The nine decades of artist Yayoi Kusama’s life have taken her from rural Japan to the New York art scene to contemporary Tokyo, in a career in which she has continuously innovated and re-invented her style. Well-known for her repeating dot patterns, her art encompasses an astonishing variety of media, including painting, drawing, sculpture, film, performance and immersive installation. It ranges from works on paper featuring intense semi-abstract imagery, to soft sculpture known as ‘Accumulations’, to her ‘Infinity Net’ paintings, made up of carefully repeated arcs of paint built up into large patterns. Since 1977 Kusama has lived voluntarily in a psychiatric institution, and much of her work has been marked with obsessiveness and a desire to escape from psychological trauma. In an attempt to share her experiences, she creates installations that immerse the viewer in her obsessive vision of endless dots and nets or infinitely mirrored space. At the centre of the art world in the 1960s, she came into contact with artists including Donald Judd, Andy Warhol, Joseph Cornell and Claes Oldenburg, influencing many along the way. She has traded on her identity as an ‘outsider’ in many contexts – as a female artist in a male-dominated society, as a Japanese person in the Western art world, and as a victim of her own neurotic and obsessional symptoms. After achieving fame and notoriety with groundbreaking art happenings and events, she returned to her country of birth and is now Japan’s most prominent contemporary artist. Knife Making: Nakiri Japanese Knife DIY

20:10
Another Japanese Chef's knife! This shape is inspired by Nakiri knives typical Japanese-style vegetable knife but with a western full tang construction and a general utility bevel geometry. The steel is 02 high carbon. Handle is made of ebony and teak (or oak, not sure) both aged well by a luthier and white vulcanized fiber liners. The pins are all brass with the middle one in mosaic made by me in a previous ideo. Clarification: With the words "inspired by Nakiri knives" I wanted to point out that this knife is not an actual nakiri. The handle construction, bevel geometry and thickness have pretty much nothing to do with traditional japanese knives. This knife has been made to be used as a general purpose knife, that's why is thicker than you might expect! http://www.amazon.com/The-Joys-Quilting-Techniques-ebook/dp/B00BVD00VE - Quilting Patterns THE 7 EASIEST QUILTING PATTERNS Sew Sailboat Quilt Blocks This Sailboat quilt is made up of thirty-five 12-inch patchwork quilt blocks sewn into horizontal rows and separated by sashing and cornerstones. Two different sailboat quilt blocks are used, and they alternate with each other side-by-side and row-to-row. Boat fabrics are warm, and contrast with the sea and sky. Endless Stairs Quilt Block Pattern Endless Stairs was the quilt block pattern for a past even in our Quilting Forum. The event is over, but do try the pattern to make a quilt for yourself -- or to organize a quilt block swap among friends. Endless Stairs is a very easy block, so easy that you can crank them out in no time at all, and the 8" finished size makes the design usable in many projects, from toddler quilts on up. Easy Framed Nine Patch Quilt Pattern This quilt is so simple, and it can be customized to suit any theme. Nine patch units are sewn with two fabrics, a green print and a blue print, and the two prints swap locations in about half of the blocks. Next, frames are sewn around the nine patches. Roman Square Quilt Block Pattern Roman Square is an easy quilt block pattern with a scrappy patchwork layout. The same basic design is known my many names, including Rail Fence, depending on the arrangement and repeats of color and color value. Roman Square is perfect for frugal quilting. You probably have leftover fabric from previous projects -- put it to use making a true scrap quilt, where color isn't a requirement. Twenty-Five Patch Quilt Block Pattern The Twenty-Five Patch quilt block is exactly what its name implies -- a design with twenty five patches within its borders, all same-sized squares. The Twenty-five Patch is a perfect block for scrap quilts, but can also be effective when sewn in an orderly fashion. You'll need to make some choices before you begin. Practical Orchard Quilt Block Pattern Quilt blocks aren't much simpler than Practical Orchard -- it's a perfect block for beginning quilters. Most of the block's patches are squares, but a single quarter square triangle unit at the block's center offers some practice with quick piecing techniques. Practical Orchard is well suited for a quilt with sashing between the blocks. Another choice is to use plain setting squares or a simple alternate block, like the dependable snowball. Maryland Beauty Quilt Block Pattern The traditional Maryland Beauty quilt block pattern has half-square triangles along the straight edges of the dark pieces that are illustrated above. It's a lovely block, but this simplified version can be just as effective if you choose fabrics with lots of visual texture. My Maryland Beauty quilt block is a perfect swap block. It's not too difficult for beginners, it doesn't have a ton of patches, and a scrappy mixture of Maryland Beauty quilt blocks makes a fantastic quilt. Mock Basket Weave Quilt Block Pattern Quilt patterns don't get much easier than the Mock Basket Weave quilt block. Grab a couple of striped fabrics, cut strips or squares, and use your quilt blocks to sew a quilt top or border in nothing flat. Stripes that run perpendicular to each other make a quilt or border look like true basketweave -- without the fuss of extra piecing. Shoofly Quilt Block Pattern I honestly wasn't sure what to call this quilt block, because there are at least ten traditional blocks that are very similar to it. It can be called an "O," but I'm stubborn enough to want a longer name. The Shoo Fly quilt block is a fairly close match, so let's go with that -- but we'll make a few adjustments to the Shoo Fly's standard color value arrangement. Framed Four-Patch Quilt Block Pattern The Framed Four-Patch quilt block is exactly what its name implies, a four-patch unit surrounded by framing strips. The illustration above shows a block made with frames that are the same width as the strips used in the four-patch interior, but you'll see other, similar quilt blocks where the outer frames are narrower or wider -- or where two frames are used per block instead of one. Use any color scheme you like for these blocks. Bold colors and whimsical prints are perfect for baby quilts and quilts for kids, but you could go with subtle florals that blend into each other somewhat, or with reproduction prints from any time period. How to Shibori Dye (Arashi Style) with Rit Dye

03:01
Shibori is a Japanese dyeing technique that typically involves folding, twisting or bunching cloth and binding it, then dyeing it in indigo. We call it a fancy version of tie-dye! Arashi is the Japanese term for “storm. It’s also known as the pole-wrapping technique. This style of shibori isn't seen as often because it requires cutting a pole or PVC pipe but it's just as easy as any other shibori technique and the results are beautiful - often resembling water waves. Learn how to achieve this look here!
