A Grafted Way to Start Knitting in the Round. Whether you are about to start knitting toe up socks or a hexipuff, there are advantages to using a grafted cast on. You could do a provisional cast-on followed by grafting the stitches together with a kitchener stitch, but why bother when something easier exists? Thanks to Judy there is this magical cast on that creates a grafted seam. It's a great way to seamlessly begin a toe-up sock, but can be used anywhere you'd like to create an enclosed tube shape in your knitting.

I think this is the best provisional cast-on on the planet. It was invented by the ingenious Judy Becker of Portland, Oregon, and first released to the world by Knitty.com. You'll find it used throughout my latest book, NEW PATHWAYS FOR SOCK KNITTERS, for everything from toe-up socks to cobblestone cuffs. I love it!

In this DROPS video we show how to make an invisible cast on. This cast on method is great for toe up socks, mittens, and other projects worked in the round where you don't want an uneven and bulky seam. Cast on sts on two double pointed needles and work one needle at the time in the round. After cast on and one row on each needle (i.e. 1 round) start inc 1 st each side of both needles on every other round to as many needed for width of foot. After a couple of rounds divide the sts on 4 dpn's and keep working in the round. This video has NO SOUND - you must read the pattern to be able to follow this video properly. You'll find a pattern where you can use this technique by clicking here: http://bit.ly/DROPS_171-39 You can find this video in many more languages, as well as search within all DROPS knitting and crochet videos here: http://bit.ly/drops-videos Find thousands of free knitting and crochet patterns here: http://bit.ly/drops-free-patterns
