NGOs criticized for sea rescues saving refugees | DW Documentary

28:26
In 2017, 95,000 refugees were rescued from the Mediterranean by humanitarian organizations. As a result, some NGOs have come under fire. The NGOs have been accused of colluding with people smugglers and providing a refugee ferry service - a charge they deny. Meanwhile the EU is paying the Libyan coastguard to intercept the refugee boats and bring back their occupants to northern Africa. Italy is straining to cope with the ongoing influx of refugees. Although 2017 saw fewer people attempting the perilous sea journey from northern Africa to the likes of Calabria, Apulia, Sicily and Lampedusa, the stream of people heading across the sea looks set to continue for the foreseeable future. At the same time, the Italian government claims that NGOs sometimes collaborate with people smugglers and have effectively set up a ferry service that no longer meets the definition of search and rescue operations. How much substance is there to the accusations? The NGOs reject the claims, with most of them refusing to sign a code of conduct that would commit them to strict - and in their eyes untenable - rules for rescuing refugees. While such a move would likely minimize the volume of refugees, it would inevitably lead to more people drowning. The new stipulations would also benefit the Libyan coastguard, which receives money from the EU to intercept the refugee boats and bring back their occupants back to northern Africa. _______ Exciting, powerful and informative – DW Documentary is always close to current affairs and international events. Saving Endangered Sea Turtle from Entangled Fishing Line - Hawaii 11.15.11

08:44
We deeply love and respect sea life and its natural cycles. Under normal circumstance we would never touch a sea turtle but this was anything but normal for the turtle. We came across this Green Sea Turtle at the bottom of the ocean while snorkeling. She was lethargic and barley moving. Upon closer look, it was noticeable that she was not moving her front flippers. She hovered near us for 30 minutes. We thought she was dying.... and she was. This beautiful Honu had become entangled in a fishing line that was wrapped tightly, multiple times around her neck and both of her front flippers making it impossible for her to move them or inhale a full breath of air. If she moved her front flippers, the fishing line would act as a noose, further tightening around her neck. She was in a life or death situation. Due to the extenuating circumstances and understanding that minutes would mean life or death for this precious Honu, human instinct to save the life of another in need, set in. We do not recommend or condone handling an endangered sea turtle. But in this unique set of circumstances, it felt like the right and only choice. She was brought closer to shore, where we were able to untangle her promptly, gently and release her safely back into the sea. Each time we cut one layer that was strangling her, she would reach her head above the water and take a huge gasp of air and look at us. When her flippers were free, she immediately began moving them with a felt sense of relief. It is illegal to kill, capture or harass sea turtles. All six species of sea turtles in the US are protected under the Endangered Species Act of 1973. Royalty Free Music: "The Lonely Smurfer" by Johnny Hawaii (http://johnnyhawaii.bandcamp.com/)"

Traditional long boat surf life saving - Gold Coast Australia

01:28
http://poolsafetyinspectorgoldcoast.com/ In surf lifesaving, long boats, called surf boats, while no longer used for rescues, remain one of the most popular events at surf lifesaving carnivals. The boats weigh between 180 and 250 kilograms and are crewed by four rowers and a sweep Surfboat racing is a serious business. The sport has always been progressive. Brute strength helps, but it doesn't rule. Technique is vital and has often been a connection between the surfboat rowing scene and flat water scullers. Many Australian crews had recognised the benefits of weight training, good diet and the no alcohol edict long before they were common to other sports. If crews want to be genuinely competitive, they'll be training many afternoons after work and spending their weekends travelling to carnivals, and this is still supposed to be an amateur game. Various, Bilbo and lifeguard Mark Lee doing swimming exercises in water 5. SOUNDBITE: (English) Steve Jameson, Head Lifeguard, Sennen Cove "There are no swimming tests for dogs as such in this country yet. Maybe there will be in times to come, but we set our own tests for him. IE he had to be able to swim out through at least two foot of surf, he had to be able to swim a certain distance with one of us swimming as well. But he'll swim all day anyway, they're renowned for their swimming abilities these dogs." 6. Tilt down from close up of Bilbo's head to his feet 7. SOUNDBITE: (English) Steve Jameson, Head Lifeguard, Sennen Cove "Well we trained him up to recognise when somebody is panicking and shouting for help and waving. When he sees somebody in this manner he'll go straight into the water right away and swim out to the casualty. We've got a harness on him when he comes down to the beach to do these duties, and on to the harness we'll attach a Petersen Tube, or buoyancy aid, and he'll go out into the sea with this on, swim out to the casualty and rather than go straight to the casualty he'll go round the casualty bringing that tube close to them. And when he feels the weight of them clutching the tube, when he feels that weight come on he knows then that he's got to turn round and head back to the beach. And he does it remarkably well I must say." 8. Bilbo watching as lifeguard runs into the sea for lifesaving practice 9. Lifeguard swimming through water 10. SOUNDBITE: (English) Mark Lee, Lifeguard, Sennen Cove "Bilbo's really helped us this summer just for getting our message across because our job is ninety per-cent education, its not all about just going in and doing rescues, and we're continually telling people, going around asking them if they're aware of the flag system we operate on the beach. Thats where Bilbo's really good because he's got all the information written on his jacket and once you get the message across to the kids that it. The kids are telling their parents, telling relations, brothers and sisters. And its just been probably the easiest summer we've had for educating people with him in the team." 20. Head Lifeguard Steve Jameson putting jacket on Bilbo 21. Bilbo and Steve walking off viewing platform 23. Bilbo and Steve mounting quad-bike and heading down to beach 24. Close shot, Bilbo on back of quad bike 25. SOUNDBITE: (English) Steve Jameson, Head Lifeguard, Sennen Cove "I just had this idea that if I had a safety -jacket, or a jacket made for him with safety messages on it for people to swim between the red and yellow flags and suchlike, then people would pay far more notice of him than they would of any sign. " 26. Various, children stroking Bilbo UPSOUND: (English) Steve Jameson, Head Lifeguard, Sennen Cove "This is Bilbo, he is three and a half years old.. twelve and a half stone, he is a big New Foundland swimming dog and he is here to tell you to swim between the red and yellow flags. That's what it says on his coat, so when we go into the sea we should swim between the red and yellow flags and then we will all be safe.. yeah. " 30. PRODRONE CARRYING WATER TANKS & DROPPING LIFESAVING BUOY INTO SEA

01:44
#Japanese company #Prodrone has released what it calls "the #world's #first #dual #robot #arm large-format #drone", with the ability to carry heavy objects and perform detailed tasks. The PD6B-AW-ARM drone weighs 20 kilograms and can carry objects with a maximum weight of 10 kilograms. It can fly for up to 30 minutes, with a maximum forward speed of 60 kilometres per hour (37 miles per hour), and has a maximum operating altitude of 5,000 metres (16,404 feet). Its two remotely-operated five-axis robotic arms are able to grasp objects varying in shape and size, and have the ability to cut cables, turn dials, or flick switches. The drone is also designed to be useful in performing tasks that are perilous for humans, such as retrieving hazardous materials or objects at high altitude. The company says the industrial and commercial drone market is focused on using UAVs (unmanned aerial vehicles) for #photography and #filming, mapping, and surveying sites, but has not met strong demands for UAVs with carrying and transporting features. It hopes to develop more 'task-oriented' drones in the future. The PD6B-AW-ARM was unveiled at this month's InterDrone show in Las Vegas, but no pricing details have yet been announced by its makers.
