We’re standing in line at the grocery store, waiting to unload our baskets, when our eyes catch the variety of magazines on display. From fitness to fashion to gossip, these strategically placed magazines are meant to pull us in and get us to make that one extra purchase. For a lot of people it actually works. We just can’t resist the stories and secrets that are being displayed on the cover. Even if we manage to get past that, the cover picture usually finishes the job as we want to see more of a scandal or popular celebrity who’s been photographed during a shoot or by the paparazzi. Despite earlier predictions about the power and influence of the internet, magazines aren’t dead yet. Circulation for the more popular publications range from a couple million readers for the likes of Redbook and Glamour, to several million for magazines like National Geographic and Better Homes and Gardens. Sure, a lot of these publications can be found online, but people are still willing to pay money to have a hard copy in their hands. There’s money to be made here and that’s why magazines continue to work so hard to fill those grocery and newsstands and attract potential buyers. What’s the secret to selling magazines and the stories they have inside? You need a reputation for providing good stories, supplying information that people want and, of course, including relevant pictures that tie in with the story and hold out interest. Let’s face it, we are heavily influenced by visual cues and most people are drawn to magazines thanks to the pictures on the cover. We also love celebrities and stars, so when a popular person or individual caught in a scandal gets thrown on a cover or handed a several page photo shoot found inside, we are likely going to pick up that magazine. This means that publishers work hard to get the best pictures and images that really pop. Naturally, they can go to extremes touching up images to remove wrinkles, shadows and other distractions so the individual looks their best on a cover. Sometimes this goes more than a bit far and the final product is so altered or ‘Photoshopped,’ that it doesn’t look right. The 10 magazine images ahead have all been Photoshopped or edited to some degree. In all cases, over editing or poor work has produced a picture which has caught people’s attention. These Photoshop fails have produced a range of reactions after people caught on to the alterations. From anger related to the female body image portrayed by bad editing to straight up bemusement concerning what can only be considered lazy Photoshop work, these fails make you wonder what sort of people are in charge at these companies and who is monitoring quality control. Behind The Retouching | John Ross Architecture
www.TheArtofRetouching.com - In this Behind the Retouching, I was commissioned for Advanced Photoshop Magazine for issue #128 to create this Architectural image. If you’ve always wondered what goes on behind the scenes during an actual photo retouching session, you’ve come to the right place. As with my previous feature in Advanced Photoshop Magazine #126, I worked to satisfy the requirements of the client with this image. I chose this photo for the two-page spread knowing that I would need a lot of dead space for the graphic designers to work with, and there was an opportunity to play around with lens flare and various other visual techniques. To show you exactly how I arrived at the final image, let’s get down to business. Thank you for taking the time to watch how I work behind the scenes. As always, I’ll be more than happy to share comprehensive, easy-to-follow, and bite-sized tutorials with you at The Art of Retouching Studio. Simply click on the link to get access to a vast collection of lessons on Photoshop basics, advanced techniques, and insider tips and tricks to help you become a master photo retoucher.
Retouching in Motion - Andrea Belluso
Ever wonder what photo retouching really is? Here's a video that will give you an insight about what goes into retouching and cleaning up a photograph. It's not blurring or airbrushing skin, and there's no magic button. Half of the time, you won't even know an image is retouched when it's done correctly and that's what it should be. It should what a person looks like on their best day, realistic yet natural and full of visible skin texture. This is for people in the industry as well as outside of it, to bridge the gap of understanding what it's really about amid the bad media out there. Process: Retouching time-lapse video, showcasing the work of team Andrea and Amanda Belluso (http://www.belluso.com/) (https://www.houseofbelluso.com/). Music provided by Andrea Belluso After the video: After the video, there were a few things I addressed that I did not do in the video, one is going further on the foot and the color to ensure it was consistent with the rest of the skin, the moire on the leg, and further dodge and burning. But the principles were identical. Technical: This is a recent retouching timelapse video I made to showcase a non-destructive and simplified workflow, using primarily healing, cloning, dodge and burn, and color correction to execute a final image. The intention of this video is: * To show people not educated in retouching about what goes into cleaning up skin and the length of time it may take in a quick overview. * To show creatives who might be looking to see how other retouchers work to clean up an image without being destructive. * For fun! Production: Created in conjunction with Andrea Belluso. Music: "Love is on the Run (Instrumental) by Stefano Mastronardi" Education: For education on learning retouching, I have a full (slowed down!) 3 day course which goes over everything you see here and more on Creative Live: https://www.creativelive.com/courses/... The Amazing Power of Frequency Separation Retouching in Photoshop
I Guarantee I Can Teach You to Master Photoshop. Learn How: https://phlearn.com/aaronwillteachyou What is Frequency Separation? Frequency separation helps make retouching a portrait easier in Photoshop. Frequency separation works because it allows you to separate the texture of an image from the tone and color. When retouching you can focus on just the texture or the skin beneath it. Master Frequency Separation Here: https://phlearn.com/tutorial/amazing-power-frequency-separation-retouching-photoshop/ It sounds quite complex but in practice it is quite simple. If you want to work with texture, choose the high frequency layer, if you want to work with skin choose the low frequency layer. Getting Started with Frequency Separation To get your image set up for frequency separation you will have to make 2 copies of your background layer. If you are not starting from the beginning, add a Stamp Visible layer over all layers by typing CTRL+ALT+OPTN+E. One of these copies will be for your low frequency (skin) and one will be for your high frequency (texture). First apply a Gaussian Blur to the lower (low frequency) layer. Choose a radius that blurs out the skin texture, but don't go too far as to make the face unrecognizable. Next choose your high frequency layer and go to Image, Apply Image. Here you will want to se the Layer: to the low frequency layer. For blending choose Subtract and for Scale:2, Offset:128. These will be your settings every time, no need to change them. Now you should have one layer with a blur (low frequency) and a layer above it that looks mostly gray (high frequency). Select the high frequency layer and change the blending mode to "Linear Light". Your image should now look identical to the image before you started the process. Correcting Underlying Color To correct the underlying color (skin) choose an area with the lasso tool. I suggest feathering the selection to make it look more realistic. Use Q for Quick Mask as a quick way to see what your selection looks like. After you have made your selection choose the low frequency (blurred) layer and apply a Gaussian Blur in the selection. Choose a radius high enough to blend the tones together. Repeat this process over different areas of the portrait to smooth the skin tones. Because the texture is on a different layer, it should stay in tact during this entire process. Correcting Texture If you need to correct texture, we recommend waiting until after you do the tone. Select the high frequency layer and choose the Clone Stamp Tool. In the Clone Stamp Tool settings be sure to hit Sample: Current Layer. This will make sure you are just using the texture and not sampling anything else. Then on your high frequency layer sample good skin texture using ALT and then paint over "bad" skin texture. This will work very well for stray hairs, acne, wrinkles and other small blemishes. Seventeen Magazine To Stop Airbrushing Models?!
Seventeen Magazine To Stop Airbrushing Models?! http://bit.ly/SubClevverStyle - Subscribe to ClevverStyle! http://Twitter.com/ClevverTV - Follow Us! It's not just doctors and parents that are crying out to stop the teen airbrushing in magazines—now teens themselves are speaking out against photoshop! A brave 13-year old by the name of Julia Bluhm submitted a petition on Change.Org titled, "Seventeen Magazine: Give Girls Images of Real Girls," to explain the damage these airbrushed images have done to her and her friends body confidence. Bluhm, who is a middle school student in Maine writes on the site quote, " Those "Pretty women" that we see in magazines are fake. They're often photoshopping, air-brushed, edited to look thinner, and to appear like they have perfect skin. A girl you see in a magazine probably looks a lot different in real life." And Julia is spot on, over the years we've seen celebs ditch the photoshop and airbrushing for their magazine covers and quite a different, but still beautiful image is revealed. In May of 2010—Jessica Simpson covered Marie Claire with no retouching, showing off a still gorgeous image of the now very pregnant star. While, Kim Kardashian went to the cover of Life & Style magazine to combat body comments, saying quote, "I have cellulite, so what!" So, in an emotional plea, Julia asks one seemingly simple favor from Seventeen Magazine—"To commit to printing one unaltered—real—photo spread per month." She says, "For the sake of all the struggling girls all over America, who read Seventeen and think these fake images are what they should be, I'm stepping up!" I'm Brianna Baxter for Daily Style.

Behind the Retouching - John Ross Beauty
http://www.TheArtofRetouching.com - In this image for Advanced Photoshop Magazine #132, I will be taking you through an in-depth look at how I work and why I do what I do. Because summarizing my techniques into a few pointers for an article just won’t do, I’m going to break down every detail of my workflow so that you can see how I came up with my final photo. This is less about the how, and much more about the why. For those who want to see my thought process as I go through my images, you’ve come to the right place. Here are the core fundamentals on how I came up with this final photo: Camera Raw is your friend. When you need to make fast, basic, overall adjustments to your color and tone, simply adjusting the sliders in Camera Raw will get the job done. Know the technical specs of your image. Inside Camera Raw, the blue text beneath the photo will let you adjust the Adobe RGB Color Space and the 16-bit Bit Depth of the image, as well as set the Resize to Fit to 125% and the Resolution to 300 pixels per inch. Adjust your base image alignment when necessary. To make sure that the model is in the right position, I used guides pulled from the rulers in order to create a grid for the model. Take care of the technical issues on the front end before you start retouching. In this case, the so-called “white” background isn’t actually pure white because this image comes straight from the studio. Masking is your friend, too. There are many ways to select areas in your image. You can use the Magic Wand or Quick Selection to select the background. My own prefered method is to click on Quick Mask, and use the Paintbrush to paint in the remaining areas until you get a full selection of the background. The Info palette can help you check your color values. After making a Layer Mask of the model, I then added a new layer with my pure white background. Under Window – Info, you can check the RGB and CMYK values of the background to see if it’s truly pure white. Don’t be afraid to go back into Camera Raw. At this point, I usually evaluate the image and see whether or not I want to make more changes to the raw file. Using Open as Image will open the pixel background, but if you hold down the shift key, it will open the image as a Smart Object still attached to Camera Raw. Layer Order matters. Because Photoshop layers work top-down, by creating a Curves layer at the very top, I added more contrast by whitening the whites and darkening the darks. Create your Layers in a linear fashion. This will allow you to group your layers in pieces that won’t overlap with each other. Smart Objects help you work non-destructively. Smart Objects mean that I don’t have to create copy after copy of my background image. All of the filters that I create are applied directly on to the Smart Object itself, and I can turn them on and off whenever I want to without damaging the rest of my photo. Smart Filters work from the bottom-up. As opposed to Layers, Smart Filters first apply the adjustments that are at the bottommost before applying what’s on top. Imagenomic Portraiture may or may not make life easier for you, but it sure does for me. Portraiture helps smooth out the skin and remove blemishes, as long as you use it under a controlled situation without going overboard with your effects The Blur Gallery can help give your image a little depth of field. By blurring the back of the model’s head a bit, I was able to make it look more realistic without the model looking like she was cut out from the background. When it comes to Cloning the skin, a simple Healing Brush works best. The Healing Brush matches the color and the tone from the source area with the target area. Don’t forget the purpose of your work. It’s easy to get lost in the retouching when you’re right in the middle of it, but always remember why you’re doing what you’re doing. Sometimes, you just need to go pixel per pixel. While Photoshop has a number of tools that make life easier for you as a retoucher, there are just some instances where shortcuts do not work. Because the model in this image had dark skin shadows under her eyes, I had to use a Clone Stamp, reduce my brush size to about 2, zoom in, and just go per pixel. Using the Alt key or the Cmd key, I selected a lighter source area and used the Clone stamp tool over the darker areas bit by bit until the skin began to match the lighter skin smoothly. Behind the Retouching - John Ross Beauty
www.TheArtofRetouching.com - For Photoshop Creative Magazine #125, they wanted me to show what Portrait Retouching is all about. There are many different styles for portraits. Depending on what you’re working on—Studio, Beauty, or Fashion pieces—you can apply darker shades, be more gritty, use bright and soft edges, or go to town with more creative approaches. Basically, your style depends on the effect that you want your final image to have. In this photo, we’re going for a Beauty Portrait tutorial, which means that I have to make the image model look flawless, but realistic. Welcome to Behind the Retouching, an in-depth tutorial where I walk you through the whole process of an actual retouching session. My name is John Ross, and if you’ve always wondered how the final product of a retouched photo is made, then I have all the answers to your questions right here. In this comprehensive session, I will take you through my thought processes as we go step-by-step in taking an image from raw file to finished product. I won’t spare any detail, so strap yourselves in and let’s begin.

Remove imperfections, Perserve Skin texture and pores easily and quickly. Remove blemishes, wrinkles, acne. How to Retouch Hair in Photoshop
I Guarantee I Can Teach You to Master Photoshop. Learn How: https://phlearn.com/aaronwillteachyou Download the Sample Image Here! https://phlearn.com/retouch-hair How to Remove Stray Hair The best tool to remove stray hair is the Content Aware Healing Brush Tool. Be sure to create a new layer and choose “Sample All Layers” from the top menu. This tool can be used to remove most stray hair and any hair that is moving in the wrong direction. How to Clean Up Edges and Create a Hair Outline The Spot Healing Brush Tool gets confused when working on more complicated areas like the edges of the hair. To create a clean edge, we need to create a selection. Start by using the Pen Tool to trace an edge around the hair in your photo. Simply click and drag in the direction of the hair and create a loop. After making a Pen Path to define the edge, right-click on the path and choose “Make Selection” After making a selection, create a new layer and choose the Clone Stamp Tool. Be sure to sample “Current and Below.” With the selection active, hold ALT/OPTN to sample outside of the hairline, then paint inside of the selection to remove stray hair and clean the edge of the hair. If needed, inverse the selection and paint more hair inside of the hair line. Repeat these steps as necessary to clean up the complete hair line. Add Additional Hair with the Brush Tool To begin, choose the Brush Tool and make the brush size small enough to replicate the width of a hair. Sample the color from the existing hair by holding ALT/OPTN and clicking on the hair. Next, paint small lines at the edge of the hair to replicate stray hair. Why would we add more stray hair? Hair will never have a 100% solid edge, after all, it is made up of thousands of individual strands. To make the hair more realistic, paint in a few “well placed” strays. The goal here is to make the hair look real, not to make it messy again. How to Fill in Gaps in Hair Some hair styles will have gaps where hair doesn’t fall correctly. In this case, the subject’s bangs have a few areas where the hair isn’t filled in. Choose the Clone Stamp Tool and make the brush size small enough to replicate the width of a hair. Hold ALT/OPTN to sample the hair and paint it in strokes to fill in the gaps! JJTV #64 - Kelly Clarkson retouching kerfuffle
Self Magazine recently defended their "retouching" of Kelly Clarkson in their September issue in order to make her "look her personal best". And in doing so, managed to reaffirm the magazine industry "looking their professional worst." Which got me to thinking...is the magazine business arrogant or just (hopelessly) out of (re)touch?

Portrait Retouching Tip: Fix Shiny Skin in Photoshop & Lightroom
Shine is great on silver and gold but not so much on your portrait subjects face. It is not too difficult to fix oily skin in Photoshop. Stay tuned and I’ll show you a super quick retouching tip to eliminate shiny skin or oily skin in both Photoshop and Lightroom. It’s summer time… you shoot a wedding or an outdoor portrait and because of the heat your subject has shiny skin or your new to lighting and haven’t quite perfected things yet and you have a great shot – but your subjects skin is shiny – it's easy to fix in post-production. A few quick reminders… FIX it in post is NEVER the best solution – so as you are practicing and learning your craft – ALWAYS strive to get it right in camera. Also – if you are doing portraits or headshots or modeling shots and you want to up your game – lighting is just a piece of the puzzle – you need to find a great makeup artist to get your images to a pro level. Ok – to the retouching tip… Here is a great portrait that was posted in my Facebook group by Stig-Arve Holmem from Norway. We have a very young subject with lots of personality but no makeup artist and the image is just slightly over exposed, so we wind up with shiny skin in the forehead, nose and tops of the cheeks. So do we scrap the image? Heck no – it’s a great shot and easily repaired. Lena Dunham Bans Photos Editors From Retouching
Lena Dunham, The “Girls” creator is banning photo editors from retouching her images. She recently became engaged in a dispute with bosses at Tentaciones magazine. She accused them of altering her cover shot to make her look slimmer. Lena posted the shot, and said " NOT what my body has ever looked like or will ever look like.” She continued on to say “The gap between what I believe and what I allow to be done to my image has to close now --If that means no more fashion-magazine covers, so be it.
