MEC's Tej Desai: Raising The Perception Levels Of Marriott's 30-Plus Brands

ORLANDO – Marriott hotels knows a lot about what people talk about on social media and it’s become “a content machine” fueled by data and technology. “In our work for Marriott, we talk about customer centricity all the time,” says Tej Desai, Managing Partner at agency MEC. A year ago, Marriott itself comprised 19 different brands. Then came its acquisition of Starwood Hotels and the combined brand tally now exceeds 30. “Bringing those brand perception levels higher to actually drive the right consumers into the purchase journey is key,” Desai says in this interview with Beet.TV. “So we’re helping them sort of reinvent that purchase journey to make sure it’s connected from the top to the bottom.” Among other results for these efforts, Marriott and MEC picked up Gold and Silver Creative Data Lions at this year’s Cannes International Festival of Creativity. The awards, given to M Live—Marriott International’s global marketing real-time center—were in the categories of Social Data and Use of Real-time Data. M Live is the touch point across all 30 Marriott brands used to identify pop culture trends and create real-time content directly with on-property guests on social channels based on geo-fencing technology. One benefit of working in the hotel category is that unlike insurance or packaged goods, which are often pitched as necessities, “it’s something you want to do. It’s aspirational. You want to go on vacation,” says Desai. “We have that to our advantage.” As a part of GroupM, MEC shares its digital brand safety standards and works with Marriott and other clients to build brand safety guidelines for global implementation “to make sure that our ads aren’t being seen where they shouldn’t be seen.” While he acknowledges that working with walled gardens like Facebook and Google “is tough because they see a lot of our media spend,” Desai says maintaining close partnerships with digital and traditional media providers produces learnings that can be applied “across the board.” This video is part of a Beet.TV leadership series produced at the ANA Masters of Marketing Conference, 2017. Under the Hotel Management Contract, conflicts can be grouped into three main categories: Level of control and influence There is an ongoing argument over to what extent a hotel owner should take control before and after the hotel opening. As an expert in hotel management, the operator has exclusive control over hotel operations. Nevertheless, major decisions and strategies must be approved by the owner. Brand standards An owner’s perspective is focused at property level, whereas the operator takes into consideration retaining brand consistency on a global basis. The challenge for the appointed Hotel Asset Manager is to find the equilibrium point between the operator’s wish to achieve uniformity and the owner’s wish to meet the needs of the local hospitality market. Budgeting process The owner aims to minimise its overall financial requirements and prioritises the enhancement of the property’s appeal. The asset management team will suggest a reasonable, justified budget based on the hotel operator’s original proposal. In order to avoid conflicts, in addition to employing a HAM, it is highly recommended to adhere to the contract and organise regular meetings with all stakeholders. (11 May 2016) LEAD IN : Milllenals visiting New York City can now stay at a hotel that is a tech savvy as they are. The Renaissance Midtown hotel features multi-sensory digital walls and floors that react with just a tap of a foot or a wave of a hand to provide the latest tourism information about the city that never sleeps. STORY-LINE: Walk down a hallway in the Renaissance Midtown hotel in New York and the walls and floor come alive. Visitors can select a walking route by standing in a circle projected on the floor. Wander down a corridor and notice how the interactive digital tapestry of images and sounds subtly changes as you pass by. Or merely point at the wall and view a tourism portal that opens up, providing information about things to do and see. Stand in footprints outlined in a circle on the floor, point at categories displayed on the wall, and screens open up delivering information. One bucket of content, for example, shows things to do within a 10-minute, 20-minute or 30-minute walk. David DiFalco, General Manager, Renaissance Midtown Hotel explains how it works: "The digital portal activates all through motion. So you step into the two footsteps that are actually on the ground and they give you some direction, and then the next thing you will notice is six buckets will appear on the ground. Those buckets have different parameters around them. So for example, one of the buckets will say '10 minute walk' and another bucket will say 'morning'. So if you step into the 10 minute walk bucket you will have nine pieces of content that will display on the screen in front of you that give you nine different attractions to be able to go to that are within a 10 minute walk of the property." "If you see one that catches your attention you simply point at it with your hand. That tile will blow up on the screen in front of you and give you very detailed information about that attraction," he adds. The portal offers details on price, hours and location, including an interactive map. Attractions include shopping, shows, museums and restaurants, sourcing content from Time Out New York which is refreshed daily. "The partnership with Time Out (Time Out New York) is that our servers every morning polls content from their server at 4 AM and refreshes all the items up on the discovery portal to make sure that they're still relevant and that we have the newest and greatest attractions that fall into the buckets on the ground," says DiFalco. Jessica Rodriquez, is managing director & partner of Wagstaff Worldwide, a marketing company specialising in tourism. "The partnership between Renaissance and TimeOut New York is really one of the most exciting pieces of this installation, from my perspective. The content that is being shown as you click and point through to find restaurants and exercise classes, the navigational element that is powered by TimeOut really gives that third-party credibility of a reliable media source. TimeOut is on the pulse of the city," she says. Hotel staff offer guests tips on using the portal to get free gifts. For example, stand before the portal, cover your eye with your hand like an eyepatch and the portal delivers a password to get a freebie at the hotel bar. The digital elements are designed to appeal to young adults, often called the millennial generation, who are technology natives. Rodriquez says that hotels need to stand out in a crowded market: "I don't think the traditional hotel experience has gotten stale necessarily, but I do think that we have a need for a wow factor as part of a differentiator for a brand narrative story or to get to get people to book into your hotel." On 23 July 2014, I saw the best in the hotel industry pit their skills against one another in the Grand Finals of the Hotel Housekeeping Challenge 2014. The competition aims to create awareness and celebrate the professional image of the housekeeping vocation. It also provided a platform to motivate and develop housekeeping professionals and provide experiential learning to housekeeping students. Co-organised by the Association of Singapore Housekeepers (ASH), e2i (Employment and Employability Institute) and ITE, the Hotel Housekeeping Challenge 2014 attracted the participation of some 30 properties (hotels/ service apartments) and five institutions. In addition to the bed-making skill area which was featured in previous years, two new areas were added this year: a) Glass cleaning, and b) Towel origami, Hotel Category: Fierce competition was seen in the Hotel category, where 30 teams vied for six spots in the Grand Finals. Eventually, The Elizabeth Hotel took home the Grand Champion trophy. Institution Categories - Preparing Students for the Job Market: Joining ITE, which has participated in the challenge since its first edition, were four new participants in the Institution Categories – SHATEC, which will be up against ITE in Category 1. The Association of Persons with Special Needs, Assumption Pathway School (APS) and Metta School competed in Category 2. ITE were the champions in Cat 1 and APS got first in Cat 2! I must state that the video does not do much justice to reflect the energy, exuberance and skills demonstrated by all the proud competitors I saw that day. Even before Friday’s announcement of Amazon’s massive, $13.7 billion acquisition of Whole Foods Markets, the online behemoth was already causing change in the incubation and sale of entrepreneurial brands. A panel early on during last week’s BevNET Live in Manhattan discussed e-marketing and a lot of the time was spent on the Amazon effect: In terms of setting up direct-to-consumer marketplaces, creating “full basket” solutions with Amazon Fresh, and simply providing a place for customers to search by keywords for specific products, the e-commerce titan has begun to exert an outsized influence in the ways consumers shop. Brands on Amazon at times are “transcending the distribution channel” in the way they are sold directly to consumers via those keywords, noted Profitero’s Keith Anderson, while some brands are simply starting businesses based on those top-searched keywords. We can’t tell you that the following video is going to supply entrepreneurs with all of the answers to questions about how things will shake out for them with Amazon folding Whole Foods into its family. But our panelists did discuss a lot of the ways companies should be thinking about a strategy that incorporates Amazon and other e-commerce plays as they seek to grow -- and that’s a discussion that has become doubly relevant in light of this most recent development. So how should you plan for e-commerce? What are the ways you can “heavy up” for Amazon? The inaugural WAN AWARDS 2017 ceremony took place on 28 February at the London Marriott Hotel just off Grosvenor Square in the heart of the city’s fashionable Mayfair district. Architects from as far afield as Australia and Ecuador gathered in magnificent surroundings to be the first to hear who had won in each of the categories covered by the WAN AWARDS.
