One Book EVERY Designer Should Own

03:05
A review of one of my all-time favorite books; one I think every designer should own. Part review and part personal reflection, it's a continuation of my previous video on goal setting. As I struggled with my traditional goal setting exercise this year, I stumbled on a new methodology and consulted this formative book in my library about the life and work of Dieter Rams for guidance. It's a book I think should be in every designer's collection and in this video I share how it's shaped my architecture practice and my approach to life. I view books as the raw materials of creativity. Looking at and learning from the work of others is crucial to the development of your personal style and I encourage sampling from every possible source you can: graphic designers, authors, engineers, sculptors, every field relies on some measure of creativity. The deeper your understanding of what’s out there the more source material you have to draw upon and the more things you can smash together to craft your own style. Dieter Rams designed more than 500 products over his forty-two-year career at Braun; he’s regarded as one of the most influential industrial designers of the 20th century yet the path that led him there was anything but premeditated. The happenstance of it is as empowering as it is unsettling. This volume explains the history and events that shaped his personal esthetic. Be sure to add this book to your library for context, depth and to understand the true measure of Herr Rams' contribution to the design world. Study it, not to replicate his style (you don’t want to look like him) but to see like him. And a special thanks to my grandfather, whose counsel I miss each day, but who will always live on in my studio and work. // GEAR I USE // DRONE: *Mavic Pro by DJI: http://amzn.to/2hW3dTA DSLR CAMERA: * Canon 6DMKII http://thirtybyforty.com/6dmkii * Canon 80D: http://amzn.to/2fBWGMQ LENSES: * Canon 24mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29l7ac5 * Canon 40mm f2.8 Lens: http://amzn.to/29x2QcI * Canon 10 - 18mm f4.5 - 5.6 IS Lens: http://amzn.to/2vyErvS * Canon 24-70mm f2.8L Lens: http://amzn.to/2DMt0Y5 MUSIC I USE: * http://thirtybyforty.com/music AUDIO: * Rode VideoMic Pro (hotshoe mtd.): http://amzn.to/29qlNM3 * ATR-2100 USB (dynamic mic): http://amzn.to/2dFDaKp ARCHITECTURE GEAR: * Copic Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/copic-sketch * Prismacolor Markers: http://thirtybyforty.com/markers * Timelapse Camera: http://thirtybyforty.com/brinno * AutoCAD LT: http://amzn.to/2dxjMDH * SketchUp PRO: http://amzn.to/2cRcojz * HP T120 Plotter: http://amzn.to/2dBGf1O * Adobe CC Photography (Photoshop/Lightroom) Plan: http://amzn.to/2dhq5ap CAD DRAWING TEMPLATE: * Download here: http://thirtybyforty.com/autocad-template STARTUP TOOLKIT: * Architect + Entrepreneur Startup Toolkit: http://thirtybyforty.com/SPL -~-~~-~~~-~~-~- Please watch: "Problems and Challenges - A Day in the Life of an Architect Vlog" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=rHR3Iqm5464 -~-~~-~~~-~~-~-

Flip Through - How to Draw by Scott Robertson and Thomas Bertling

01:16
Short book-review of How to Draw - Drawing and sketching objects and environments from your imagination by Scott Robertson and Thomas Bertling Drawing in perspective is one of the key skills any artist should possess. When it comes to teaching industrial design sketching and perspective there's just no better teacher than Scott Robertson. The perspective drawing topic might be tough and boring at times but it's a necessary evil, if you want to become good at drawing realistic objects. The book itself is great, not especially for complete beginners though, because it gets pretty technical very quick. The book comes with a few demonstration videos which also comes in very handy for understanding the concepts. The artwork itself is as always amazing. Just plain and simple you can't go wrong with any training course or book by Scott Robertson.

Software: Sketchbook Pro More tutorials at http://www.thedesignsketchbook.com How to make your sketches more real - Industrial design sketching Full article on the blog. When you start learning how to sketch, you study and practice basic rules drawing line of perpective, line of geometry and simple shapes such as square, circles… and so on. We are going to see something that will change your daily habit when you draw. At the end of the video you will know how to make you simple shape become more real. In other words, how you will transform a geometric shape to an object. At the end of the video, you will see a small demo with a touch screen phone. Recipe from basic shape to more realistic sketch Recipe to draw from geometric shape to a more realistic object. This simple technique will push you to the next level ! – Feel free to add some line weight below the object to give it more weight. (It’s like a dark and thin shadow below the rounded edges) Same logic here. Can you feel the difference ? Reminder: Draw the full ellipses for the sphere contour line. Or your sphere may appear flat. For the sphere, it’s already all rounded. So how to add more rounded edges ?? You simply can’t. But we can play with a bit of lighting and the contour lines. I bold a bit the edges of the contour lines, especially below the “ball”. Make sure your contour lines goes inside the hole to understand it. Play with your angle of contour lines to decide of the roundness. You don’t have to be perfect in your drawing. Make sure your perspective is fine and that your main shape is there. Then, everything will be alright. That’s all for today ! Pretty easy right ? So now it’s the time to take a pen and practice ! Let me know about your sketches in the comments, or let me a question if you have any.

Sketch your product design ideas fast | Design Sketching tutorial

DOWNLOAD THE DESIGNER STARTER KIT: http://bit.ly/thedesignerstarterkityt MORE ON THE BLOG: http://www.thedesignsketchbook.com/how-to-multiply-your-ideas-with-the-random-product-technique/ Today, may I share with you How we can train our brain to think faster at getting ideas? As a beginner, we often face the blank page. We just start a project that our mind suddenly seams so empty we could hear the crickets. :P It is sometime source of stress or impatience. But don’t worry it’s normal. Getting ideas can be trained. Let me share you a technique I personally like as it gives us a lot freedom. If you are new at Photoshop, feel free to get introduced to Photoshop brushes here: http://www.thedesignsketchbook.com/tip-98-video-how-to-make-your-first-sketches-on-photoshop-interface-and-brush-introduction/ Explore ideas like how you could do with a Brainstorming. It’s somehow like a “Visual brainstorming” though. Most innovations come from idea association. That’s what we are going to work on. This exercise use the Random product technique we saw in a previous article. The trick here is to keep drawing having your pen always in movement as well as you ideas will flow in your mind. (As usual do not use any eraser as it will stop your flow of ideas). Before starting, gather few inspiration pictures you like. Keep them in front of you, and spot some interesting details before starting to sketch for a couple of minutes. Then start ! From there you associate, dissociate, transform, extract the elements and import them in your sketches. Do not remain on only one sketch, do a few or as many as you can. Anytime, feel free to go back to a previous one or even combine the sketches you have done together. It’s really free ! For now the products you will draw may not make sense for the real world application – as you will more or less gather the elements randomly. But as soon as your brain will be more used to this “flow of ideas routine”, you will be even more prepared the day you have to follow guidelines. That’s how you will rise your chances to add in unexpected touch to the project. :) As a Bonus, I added a quick tutorial about Digital rendering with Photoshop. Let me know if it’s something that interest you. If you are, let me know in the comments, so I will do some more.
Product Design rendering and sketching by Art&Design

06:31
Design is about progress. It is the conceptualization and creation of new things: ideas, interactions, information, objects, typefaces, books, posters, products, places, signs, systems, services, furniture, websites, and more. Designers imagine and make. They also research and think. Skilled in one or more specialties of the discipline, designers use their abilities in collaboration with others. Designers want to make ideas real and to make a difference. A career in design is more than a job. It is a way of seeing; a way of interacting with the world. It is a way of life.
