Who is a Product Manager and What do they do? [Career Insights]

07:54
The role of a product manager is crucial but also one of the least understood ones. What does a product manager really do? Is he more of a data analyst? Or someone who deals with the tech aspects of product, leading the team of engineers? Or does the product manager largely concern himself/herself with user experience, design or the overall business strategy? Mind-boggling isn't it? No wonder the role is difficult to understand for most. In this video, Ravijot Chugh, Co-Founder and Product Head at UpGrad, explains in detail the various responsibilities a Product Manager has, and that you need to execute to the best of your ability to be a good PM. If you want to bag one among the thousands of highly coveted openings for Product Managers between now and 2020 (only to grow exponentially even after), you need to start upgrading your existing skills and mastering these key skills. Product Managers are often referred to as mini-CEOs of the product. This is why, at tech companies, startups and large MNCs that are now diversifying, alike, the role of Product Managers is lucrative and one of the most important in the organization. Product Manager - 10 Essential Skills to Master (In 2019)

06:51
Product Management is a fast-growing and niche area to develop a career in. Naturally, there are some essential skills that can get you to be the very best of the lot. While the need for Product Managers is increasing by the day - in startups, tech companies and other large companies alike - the supply in India is currently only limited to a few thousands and compares poorly to countries such as the US. As per the Google and Accel Partners SAAS Report, there are roughly 36,000 Product Managers in India and the number is expected to increase to about 68,000 Product Managers by 2020. So, the need is apparent. But what does one have to do to get there? How to become a Product Manager? A common misconception is that Product Managers need to only master certain hard skills such as business understanding, tech and data. However, this would only mean the job is half done. To be a successful Product Manager you must have some soft skills too. These include communication, negotiation and leading without authority among many others. But don't worry about backgrounds, as Product Managers have been known to have diverse work and educational experience prior to making the transition into Product Management. Ravijot Chugh, Co-Founder and Product Head at UpGrad, explains in this 3rd part of the Careers-In-Shorts Series what these key skills are and how one can ace them to get on the road to being a great Product Manager. Bud Tribble and Steve Jobs describing a Product Manager role in 1986

01:01
In the early days on NeXT Computer, a word processor was needed for NeXT's new computer. Bud Tribble, an founding employee and lead engineer at NeXT and now VP at Apple, was tasked to build a word process but was given no specification of what features were needed. This made it impossible for Bud to give an accurate scope to meet the deadline of the NeXT computer launch. It's awesome to see Bud Tribble and Steve Jobs describe what a Product Manager would do back then.

That doesn't change if you've been a PM for one day or ten years. This session focused on the lessons Neha Monga, Head of Product for global marketplace pricing at Amazon, has learned from launching products over her 10+ years long career as a product manager. Key Takeaways: 1. Launch a lot - get better at product launches by doing it often and developing pattern matching. 2. Short term vs. long term - have an idea of what the North Star looks like, but launch intermediate stages that create value for customers and still allows you to validate hypotheses. 3. One-way door vs. two-way door - maximize your optionality. Some launches are a one way door and can never be reversed. Others are two-way doors. Try to create more two-way doors. 4. Have a plan - pivot, double down, abandon. Know what you are looking for from the launch - what decisions and what are the next steps. 5. What are you doing to make the launch a success - releasing a product isn’t good enough. What are you trying to do to actually get - adoption, awareness? Have a strong GTM plan. Neha Monga is currently Head of Product for global marketplace pricing at Amazon. Prior to Amazon, she held multiple product positions at Expedia, Microsoft and Zynga. Outside of work, she loves to travel (6 continents and 34 countries so far) and play squash. How to Plan a Product Management Career - Ramsey Pryor

04:12
In Chapter 20 of 22 of his 2010 Capture Your Flag interview with host Erik Michielsen, international Internet product management executive Ramsey Pryor provides a product management career development framework. Pryor lists three stages of product management. The first is a mainline product manager role that provides opportunity to give birth to a product, go to market, and learn from the experience. The second stage is a group product manager role that includes managing a product family, defining the company product approach, and managing a product manager team. The third is a company product executive role such as VP Product, that includes managing resources, budget, sales and marketing relationships at an executive-facing level. Within these three groups, Pryor highlights an additional division between new product managers, or trailblazers, and mature product managers, or optimizers. Pryor encourages product managers to get experience in both areas and develop a preference. Pryor earned an MBA from the University of Navarra IESE Business School in Barcelona, Spain and a BA in Economics and Spanish from Northwestern University. In fact, product manager salaries start at $69,000 and can go as high as $140,000 in the US and product management jobs will grow at a rate of 12% of the next decade. On paper the job sounds amazing, but it's important to hear directly from experienced product managers. Ryan Hoover started his career off as a product manager at InstantAction and then eventually moved to Play Haven as the Director of Product Management. At Play Haven, Ryan gain the skills he needed to venture off on his own and start his own product and company, Product Hunt (which is now a funded-company). Because most colleges don't provide product management tracks or courses, Ryan learned most of the skills he needed to be a product manager on the job like empathy and intuition -- understanding customers, what they want and what they need. Ryan spent his days a product manager looking at the data and metrics for his products and going to talk to customers in person. Along with the internal data analysis tools, Ryan and the product management team used project management tools (Pivotal and then moved to JIRA), Gmail, Google Docs, and whiteboards on a day to day basis to do their product management job. Ryan also used Omnigraffle for wireframing, but he likes to start with pen and paper to start to just get the barebones design and functionality down before jumping into software like Omnigraffle or Balsamiq. What Now? Becoming a manager is a part of some software developers. They work during some years, get to know the company, get some experience and they eventually become managers. However, the job of a manager includes a lot of different tasks than writing code: you need to manage people, have social skills, have the ability to manage projects, manage time, tasks, etc.~ With all of these tasks, writing code becomes almost secondary and can literally disappear from your day to day and regular tasks. So, what do you do after you become a manager and don't write code anymore? Will you lose your skills? How can you revert this situation? Should you even revert this situation?
