We're media students at the University of Amsterdam. For the course "Media Activism" we were assigned to create something that expressed our views on a certain topic. We wanted to do a video and as we have both struggled with body image, this seemed like the perfect topic to create a video about. Not only do we hope that this video will grant us an "AVV", but we also truly hope that this video will somehow help girls and boys that are struggling with body image right now. This video was created by: Jana Gerth Anlieka Marconi for: Media Activism 2011 University of Amsterdam Music Used in This Video: Löhstana David - T'empailler Toute Nue (Song can be found and downloaded on jamendo.com) *EDIT: we got our sufficients and passed the course. What is the influence of the outside world, such as the various media channels, on the lives of young teenage girls - negative and positive? In Titia's view a positive self-image is not dependent on who is dumber, uglier or stranger than you. The time is right, so take your own responsibility now and present yourself as you are via social media. Titia Hoogendoorn is an actress, artist and the initiator of the web site www.dingenoverdingen.nl which supports young teen girls with their self-image. Get the film: https://www.createspace.com/268411 Regardless of how closely their actual figure resembles their perception, teenagers' body image can affect their self-esteem, eating and exercise habits, relationships with others and ultimately their health. Using the series' signature student-shot style, TEEN TRUTH: BODY IMAGE presents real youths, parents, physicians, physiologists, and an entertainment professional discussing how celebrity, media, sports and peer influences can shape one's body image and ultimately lead to dangerous habits. Teasing and exclusion led Emily to develop an eating disorder and Kayla to binge eat her way to obesity; while Nolan's desire to be bigger, stronger and faster ended in health hazards due to performance enhancing drug use. In the end, this affecting film challenges viewers to think differently about how they see their body image and the body images of others, and ultimately empowers them to find true strength and beauty from within. TEEN TRUTH: BODY IMAGE is funded in part by: The Efrain Anthony Marrero Foundation - Vacaville, California Hopewell Eating Disorder Support Center - Ottawa, Canada The Kristen Watt Foundation - Stockton, California The Taylor Hooton Foundation - Plano, Texas Proceeds from this film will go to help these non-profit organizations in their fight against eating disorders and steroid abuse.

It was found that magazine images do indeed have a negative effect on the body image of girls, however, they cannot hold all of the blame.

Producer: Enchantiq. Creative Commons license: Attribution-NonCommercial-ShareAlike Young girls talk about body image and self esteem. Dove's message: Things won't change until we change them. The Dove Self-Esteem Fund. Whether it's models that wear a size 2 or movie stars with exceptional curves, beauty pressures are everywhere. And when young girls find it hard to keep up, low self-esteem can take over and lead to introversion, a withdrawal from normal life, and a waste of potential. For example, a recent survey in the United Kingdom indicated that 6 out of 10 girls thought they'd "be happier if they were thinner." Low self-esteem leads to introversion, a withdrawal from normal life and a waste of potential. For too long, beauty has been defined by narrow, stifling stereotypes. Women have told us it's time to change all that. Dove agrees. We believe real beauty comes in many shapes, sizes and ages. That is why Dove is launching the Campaign for Real Beauty. Dove's global Campaign for Real Beauty aims to change the status quo and offer in its place a broader, healthier, more democratic view of beauty. A view of beauty that all women can own and enjoy everyday. Over 50% of women say their body disgusts them (Dove Internal Study, 2002). The body fat of models and actresses portrayed in the media is at least 10% less than that of healthy women (British Medical Association, 2000) 6 out of 10 girls think they'd "be happier if they were thinner" (UK Teen Body Image Survey, January 2004) While only 19% of teenage girls are "overweight," 67% think they "need to lose weight" (UK Teen Body Image Survey, January 2004). Stereotypically "perfect" beauty imagery affects some girl's (and some women's) perceptions of themselves. Dr. Susie Orbach (psychotherapist, London School of Economics) has discovered that spending just three minutes looking at fashion magazines lowers the self-esteem of 80% of women. We can help girls to put "perfect" images of beauty into perspective. Let's face it, most of us are never going to look like the models we see in the media. But when we look at images in magazines and on the big screen, it's all too easy to forget the number of tricks that have been used to create them. But a small army of retouchers, camera operators, lighting technicians and props managers have created these artificial images. Let's show girls the reality behind the imagery!
