Reader's Digest is an American general-interest family magazine, published ten times a year. Formerly based in Chappaqua, New York, it now has its headquarters in New York City. The magazine was founded in 1922, by DeWitt Wallace and Lila Bell Wallace. For many years, Reader's Digest was the best-selling consumer magazine in the United States, losing the distinction in 2009 to Better Homes and Gardens. According to Mediamark Research (2006), it reaches more readers with household incomes of $100,000+ than Fortune, The Wall Street Journal, Business Week and Inc. combined. Global editions of Reader's Digest reach an additional 40 million people in more than 70 countries, with 49 editions in 21 languages. It is believed that the printing system MEPS was used to achieve this multi language translation. It has a global circulation of 10.5 million, making it the largest paid circulation magazine in the world. It is also published in Braille, digital, audio, and a version in large type called Reader's Digest Large Print. The magazine is compact, with its pages roughly half the size of most American magazines'. Hence, in the summer of 2005, the U.S. edition adopted the slogan: "America in your pocket." In January 2008, it was changed to: "Life well shared.” In the 1960s, RDA brought beautiful music via mega albums into millions of homes. Today this music is available by way of iTunes. Most of the Beautiful Romantic Music Videos that I have uploaded (around 1000) reflect a more perfect time or Worldview than our time. This was a time when love was real & people cared for each other better than now. It was not a perfect time at all but reflected a world that still in some ways adhered to a Christian Worldview. Compare much of the music today with that of the 50's & 60’s (& before) & note the lack of happiness & true love rampant among most of today’s life. The despair & unhappiness of today can be traced directly to our departure from a Biblical Worldview… But for now, return to that earlier time & reminisce & remember or discover for the very first time "When Lyrics Were Both Beautiful & Romantic"! Its manuscript was first written between 1796 and 1797, and was initially called First Impressions, but was never published under that title. Following revisions it was published on 28 January 1813 by the same Mr. Egerton of the Military Library, Whitehall, who had brought out Sense and Sensibility. Like both its predecessor and Northanger Abbey, it was written at Steventon Rectory. "Writer in Residence": Vol. 1 No.1 Trailer // The American Reader

05:14
Filmed at Mr. Dixon's Baltimore residence. About the subjects: Stephen Dixon is a two-time finalist for the National Book Award, for Frog and Interstate. He is the recipient of the O. Henry Award, the Paris Review Train Prize, and a Guggenheim fellowship. Mr. Dixon is a former professor of Creative Writing at Johns Hopkins University. His short works have appeared in numerous publications, including Harper's, The Paris Review, and Best American Short Stories. He lives in Baltimore. Elle Muliarchyk took her first photographs when she was a teenage model, creating hundreds of her own "campaigns" and "editorials" by secretly taking self-portraits in the changing rooms of high-fashion boutiques and wearing their expensive garments—she was arrested multiple times for doing so. Though Ms. Muliarchyk spends her life creating images and films that explore our outer shells (fashion), she in fact lives mostly inside her head. "It's literature, ideas and discourse that are the true 'love of my life,'" says the photographer.

Supermarket Checkers: "The Front Line" 1965 Reader's Digest; Grocery Store Cashier Training

Features former "International Checker of the Year" champions. Presented by Reader's Digest in cooperation with Super Market Institute. Originally a public domain film from the Library of Congress Prelinger Archives, slightly cropped to remove uneven edges, with the aspect ratio corrected, and one-pass brightness-contrast-color correction & mild video noise reduction applied. The soundtrack was also processed with volume normalization, noise reduction, clipping reduction, and/or equalization (the resulting sound, though not perfect, is far less noisy than the original). https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Supermarket Wikipedia license: http://creativecommons.org/licenses/by-sa/3.0/ A supermarket, a large form of the traditional grocery store, is a self-service shop offering a wide variety of food and household products, organized into aisles. It is larger and has a wider selection than a traditional grocery store, but is smaller and more limited in the range of merchandise than a hypermarket or big-box market. The supermarket typically comprises meat, fresh produce, dairy, and baked goods aisles, along with shelf space reserved for canned and packaged goods as well as for various non-food items such as kitchenware, household cleaners, pharmacy products and pet supplies... In the early days of retailing, all products generally were fetched by an assistant from shelves behind the merchant's counter while customers waited in front of the counter and indicated the items they wanted. Also, most foods and merchandise did not come in individually wrapped consumer-sized packages, so an assistant had to measure out and wrap the precise amount desired by the consumer. This also offered opportunities for social interaction: many regarded this style of shopping as "a social occasion" and would often "pause for conversations with the staff or other customers." These practices were by nature very labor-intensive and therefore also quite expensive. The shopping process was slow, as the number of customers who could be attended to at one time was limited by the number of staff employed in the store. Shopping for groceries also often involved trips to multiple specialty shops, such as a greengrocer, butcher, bakery, fishmonger and dry goods store, in addition to a general store, while milk was delivered by a milkman. The concept of an inexpensive food market relying on large economies of scale was developed by Vincent Astor. He founded the Astor Market in 1915, investing $750,000 ($18 million in 2015 currency) of his fortune into a 165' by 125' corner of 95th and Broadway, Manhattan, creating, in effect, an open air mini-mall that sold meat, fruit, produce and flowers. The expectation was that customers would come from great distances ("miles around"), but in the end even attracting people from ten blocks away was difficult, and the market folded in 1917. The concept of a self-service grocery store was developed by entrepreneur Clarence Saunders and his Piggly Wiggly stores. His first store opened in 1916. Saunders was awarded a number of patents for the ideas he incorporated into his stores. The stores were a financial success and Saunders began to offer franchises. The Great Atlantic & Pacific Tea Company, which was established in 1859, was another successful early grocery store chain in Canada and the United States, and became common in North American cities in the 1920s. The general trend in since then has been to stock shelves at night so that customers, the following day, can obtain their own goods and bring them to the front of the store to pay for them. Although there is a higher risk of shoplifting, the costs of appropriate security measures ideally will be outweighed by reduced labor costs. Early self-service grocery stores did not sell fresh meats or produce. Combination stores that sold perishable items were developed in the 1920s. Historically, there was debate about the origin of the supermarket, with King Kullen and Ralphs of California having strong claims... It has been determined that the first true supermarket in the United States was opened by a former Kroger employee, Michael J. Cullen, on 4 August 1930, inside a 6,000-square-foot (560 m2) former garage in Jamaica, Queens in New York City. The store, King Kullen, operated under the slogan "Pile it high. Sell it low." At the time of Cullen's death in 1936, there were seventeen King Kullen stores in operation. Although Saunders had brought the world self-service, uniform stores and nationwide marketing, Cullen built on this idea by adding separate food departments, selling large volumes of food at discount prices and adding a parking lot...

Alberta Magazines Conference: Designing for Readers

01:03:41
The 2014 Alberta Magazines Conference session "Designing for Readers" with Matthew Bates. Know your reader. Every art director and editor has heard this before, but how do you take what you know about your audience and translate it to the page? How can your team use design to tap into the passion readers feel for the brands they love? Matthew Bates explains why, in an increasingly visual world, readers connect with far more than just the words on the page. Learn how audience research can help guide a redesign process, and how the look of your magazine can speak not only to the readers you have, but also to those you want. Matthew Bates is group creative director for both the outdoor group and home buyer group at Active Interest Media in Boulder, Colorado. He oversees the visual direction of multiple national consumer brands such as Backpacker, Climbing and Old House Journal, as well as tradeshow dailies. During his tenure at Backpacker, the magazine has won numerous awards from the Society of Publication Designers, and received its first American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) National Magazine Award for General Excellence in both the print and digital categories. In 2011, Backpacker was a finalist for Magazine of the Year at the ASME National Magazine Awards. AMPA acknowledges the financial support of the Government of Canada through the Canada Periodical Fund (CPF) of the Department of Canadian Heritage, as well as the Government of Alberta through the Alberta Media Fund (AMF) towards our project costs.

The American Novel Since 1945 (ENGL 291) In this first lecture Professor Hungerford introduces the course's academic requirements and some of its central concerns. She uses a magazine advertisement for James Joyce's Ulysses and an essay by Vladimir Nabokov (author of Lolita, a novel on the syllabus) to establish opposing points of view about what is required to be a competent reader of literature. The contrast between popular emotional appeal and detached artistic judgment frames literary debates from the Modernist, and through the post-45 period. In the second half of lecture, Hungerford shows how the controversies surrounding the publication of Richard Wright's Black Boy highlight the questions of truth, memory, and autobiography that will continue to resurface throughout the course. 00:00 - Chapter 1. The Meaning of Memoir

01:01:19
The functions of memoir are multifarious; from preservation to commemoration, investigation to discovery. Memoirists Peter Selgin (The Inventors), Sheila Kohler (Once We Were Sisters), and Dawn Raffel (The Secret Life of Objects) explored the purposes of memoir writing—both for author and reader—and how one transforms personal memories into literature. --------------------------------------- Peter Selgin is the author of Drowning Lessons, winner of the Flannery O’Connor Award for Fiction, a novel, two books on fiction writing, and several children’s books. Confessions of a Left-Handed Man, his memoir-in-essays, was short-listed for the William Saroyan International Prize. His novel, The Water Master, won the Wisdom/Faulkner Society Prize for Best Novel. His essays have won many awards and honors, including six citations and two selections for the Best American anthologies, in which the title essay of his collection appears. Selgin’s drama, A God in the House, based on Dr. Kevorkian and his suicide machine, was staged at the Eugene O’Neill National Playwright’s Conference in 1991. Other plays of his have won the Charlotte Repertory New Play Festival Competition, the Mill Mountain New Plays Competition, and the Stage 3 Theater Festival of New Plays. His paintings have been featured in The New Yorker, Gourmet, Outside, Forbes, and The Wall Street Journal, and exhibited nationally. Selgin is the prose editor of Alimentum: The Literature of Food, and nonfiction editor and art director of Arts & Letters. He is Assistant Professor of English at Georgia College and an associate faculty member of Antioch University’s Creative Writing MFA program in Los Angeles. Sheila Kohler was born in Johannesburg, South Africa. She is the author of fourteen works of fiction including the novels Dreaming for Freud, Becoming Jane Eyre and Cracks, which was nominated for the IMPAC Dublin Literary Award and made into a film starring Eva Green. Her work has been featured in the New York Times and O Magazine and included in The Best American Short Stories. She has twice won an O'Henry Prize, as well as an Open Fiction Award, a Willa Cather Prize and a Smart Family Foundation Prize. She teaches at Princeton University and lives in New York City. Dawn Raffel is an award winning author and editor. Her illustrated memoir, The Secret Life of Objects, was a Wall Street Journal bestseller. Previous books include a critically acclaimed novel, Carrying the Body, and two story collections— Further Adventures in the Restless Universe and In the Year of Long Division. Her stories have appeared in O, The Oprah Magazine, BOMB, Conjunctions, Black Book, Fence, Open City, The Mississippi Review Prize Anthology, The Anchor Book of New American Short Stories, Arts & Letters, The Quarterly, NOON, and numerous other periodicals and anthologies—most recently The Best Short Fictions 2015 (selected by Robert Olen Butler) and The Best Short Fictions 2016 (selected by Stuart Dybek). She was a fiction editor for many years, helped launch O, The Oprah Magazine, where she served as Executive Articles Editor for seven years, and subsequently held senior-level "at- large" positions at More magazine and Reader's Digest. In addition, she served as the Center for Fiction's web editor. She has taught in the MFA program at Columbia University, the Center for Fiction, and at Summer Literary Seminars in St. Petersburg, Russia; Montreal; and Vilnius, Lithuania. She currently works as a freelance editor for individuals and creative organizations, specializing in short stories, memoir, and narrative nonfiction. Her next book, a biography, is under contract at Blue Rider/Penguin.

Chris Hedges: Americans Are Living a Fantasy - The Illusion of Love, Wisdom, Happiness (2009)

01:05:31
A postliterate society is a hypothetical society in which multimedia technology has advanced to the point where literacy, the ability to read or write, is no longer necessary or common. About the book: https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/1568586132/ref=as_li_tl?ie=UTF8&camp=1789&creative=9325&creativeASIN=1568586132&linkCode=as2&tag=tra0c7-20&linkId=21cd7a8a330e0cddf1cc8a0bbc23e242 The term appears as early as 1962 in Marshall McLuhan's The Gutenberg Galaxy. Many science-fiction societies are postliterate, as in Ray Bradbury's Fahrenheit 451, Dan Simmons' novel Ilium, and Gary Shteyngart's Super Sad True Love Story. A postliterate society is different from a pre-literate one, as the latter has not yet created writing and communicates orally (oral literature and oral history, aided by art, dance, and singing), and the former has replaced the written word with recorded sounds (CDs, audiobooks), broadcast spoken word and music (radio), pictures (JPEG) and moving images (television, film, MPG, streaming video, video games, virtual reality). A postliterate society might still include people who are aliterate, who know how to read and write but choose not to. Most if not all people would be media literate, multimedia literate, visually literate, and transliterate. In his recent nonfiction book, The Empire of Illusion, Pulitzer prize--winner Chris Hedges charts the recent, sudden rise of postliterate culture within the world culture as a whole. Author Bruce Powe, in his 1987 book The Solitary Outlaw, had this to say about a post-literate society: Literacy: the ability to read and interpret the written word. What is post-literacy? It is the condition of semi-literacy, where most people can read and write to some extent, but where the literate sensibility no longer occupies a central position in culture, society, and politics. Post-literacy occurs when the ability to comprehend the written word decays. If post-literacy is now the ground of society questions arise: what happens to the reader, the writer, and the book in post-literary environment? What happens to thinking, resistance, and dissent when the ground becomes wordless? http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Postliterate_society Pulitzer Prize-winning journalist Chris Hedges wrote scathingly on the social dangers of "positive psychology", both in his column for Truthdig and, more extensively, in his 2009 book Empire of Illusion. Hedges stated corporations appeal to "positive psychology" to force employees to be happy at all times. In a similar vein, Hedges is critical of "positive psychology's" law of attraction. However, while popular in media and business, psychologists generally do not take seriously the notions of permanent happiness and law of attraction. Barbara Ehrenreich extensively critiqued "positive psychology" in her book Bright-sided: How the Relentless Promotion of Positive Thinking Has Undermined America,[189] in lectures, and interviews. Ehrenreich discussed how unrealistic, obsessive, or reckless positive thinking impedes productive action, causes delusional assessments of situations, and that people are then blamed for not visualizing hard enough, and thus "attracting" failure even in situations when "masses of lives were lost."[194] These criticisms are valid to psychologists. It is unclear to what extent Ehrenreich is critiquing the positive branch of psychology for errors of the popular positive thinking movement - especially the law of attraction, which is not taken seriously by professionals. Held argued while positive psychology makes contributions to the field of psychology, it has faults. Her 2004 article offered insight into topics including the negative side effects of positive psychology, negativity within the positive psychology movement, and the current division in the field of psychology caused by differing opinions of psychologists on positive psychology.[187] In addition, she noted the movement's lack of consistency regarding the role of negativity. She also raised issues with the simplistic approach taken by some psychologists in the application of positive psychology. A 'one size fits all' approach is not arguably beneficial to the advancement of the field of positive psychology; she suggested a need for individual differences to be incorporated into its application. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Positive_psychology Image By Nicolettemayer (Own work) [CC0], via Wikimedia Commons

The smash dance song has notched more than 90 million Spotify streams, topping iTunes in 14 territories, including Germany, Australia, Sweden and others (Top 10 in nearly 30 other markets). Released in 2012, a cleverly understated remix by German DJ/Producer Felix Jaehn helped power the global momentum building around the infectious track. “Cheerleader” originally took off in Hawaii, but Omi was getting a larger sense of the song’s ‘stickiness’ where ever he performed it live. “People just gravitated to it, always remarking how it was their favorite.” Felix Jaehn’s 2014 remix added to the combustible nature of the track,” but by deftly imbuing acoustic gestures into the mix – conga, piano, trumpet – embellishing its unornamented feel. “I loved the mix even before it took off,” says Omi. “So calm; And unusual for a remix, it made you want to listen to the words, too.” from Ultra Music Subscribe to Ultra Music - http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=ultrarecords Subscribe to UltraTV - http://www.youtube.com/subscription_center?add_user=ultratv Ultra Music is an American independent electronic music record label based in New York City. Astounding Stories - Reader's Corner (April 4, 1930)

21:15
Analog Science Fiction and Fact is an American science-fiction magazine. As of 2015, it is the longest-running continuously published magazine of that genre, the June 2015 issue being number 1,000. Initially published in 1930 in the United States as Astounding Stories as a pulp magazine, it has undergone several name changes, primarily to Astounding Science-Fiction in 1938, and Analog Science Fact & Fiction in 1960. In November 1992, its logo changed to use the term "Fiction and Fact" rather than "Fact & Fiction". It is in the library of the International Space Station. Spanning three incarnations since 1930, this is perhaps the most influential magazine in the history of the genre. It remains a fixture of the genre today. As Astounding Science-Fiction, a new direction for both the magazine and the genre under editor John W. Campbell was established. His editorship influenced the careers of Isaac Asimov and Robert A. Heinlein, and also introduced the Dianetics theories of L. Ron Hubbard in May 1950. Analog frequently publishes new authors, including then-newcomers such as Orson Scott Card and Joe Haldeman in the 1970s, Barry B. Longyear, Harry Turtledove, Timothy Zahn, Greg Bear, and Joseph H. Delaney in the 1980s, and Paul Levinson, Michael A. Burstein, and Rajnar Vajra in the 1990s. One of the major publications of what fans and historians call the Golden Age of Science Fiction and afterward, it has published much-reprinted work by such major authors as E. E. Smith, Theodore Sturgeon, Harlan Ellison, Isaac Asimov, Robert A. Heinlein, A. E. van Vogt, Lester del Rey, H. P. Lovecraft, and many others. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------

NEW: Operation Northwoods - Printer & Reader friendly + PNAC

02:52
Cleaned and uploaded for pacsteam.org Ever since I got a hold of the Operation Northwoods documents, I always hated the fact that the pages was all messed up and one of the pages is almost impossible to read at all. Therefore I have now been using a few days on cleaning it up in order to make it more printer friendly (by not having to use all the black ink) and at the same time also more reader friendly (that you can actually read the document now without having to guess or look at pixelation all the time) Operation Northwoods WikiPedia : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Operation_Northwoods DOWNLOAD THE CLEAN NORTHWOODS DOCUMENT HERE : Download FTP : http://tinyurl.com/clean-northwoods http://www.pacsteam.org/Shareware/Operation_Northwoods_Printer_and_Reader_friendly.pdf RELEATED: PNAC (project for the new American century) : https://web.archive.org/web/*/http://www.newamericancentury.org/ Download the document here : http://www.pacsteam.org/Shareware/documents/RebuildingAmericasDefenses.pdf --- "...advanced forms of biological warfare that can target specific genotypes may transform biological warfare from the realm of terror to a politically useful tool." Who said this? Hitler? Goebbels? Attila The Hun? Mussolini? Ivan The Terrible? This is a statement overtly supporting GENOCIDE. This is not politics as usual. What would you think if the President of the United States said this? Would you care? Would you worry about your own genotype? Would you be concerned that you could be targeted? Are you ready to have a mist of these advanced forms of biological warfare in your neighborhood? How will you know that your specific genotype will not be targeted? Who will die around you? Will your family survive? In fact, this is a quote by a group called the Project For The New American Century, and its 2000 document "Rebuilding America's Defenses." The Project For The New American Century is a think-tank group pursuing exactly genocide right here in the United States of America. Unbelievable? See the think- tank's website at http://pacsteam.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=11722&p=72143 How does this relate to the President Of The United States? This document was written by, and signed by, many of the current Bush administration officials. They want to kill people who are not like them. Just look at the signatories. Science Fiction? This is not some distant futuristic plan. This technology is available now. It is not perfect, but it is being refined quickly and methodically. The Media is not covering this because it is run by five huge companies. Two are military contractors that make billions on selling weapons of war (General Electric and Westinghouse), the third is owned by a foreign national with a very obvious political agenda (Newscorp), the fourth has very close CIA ownership contacts going back to Bill Casey and Capitol Cities (Disney), and the fifth has ownership connections with the other four and recently ousted the 'liberal' Ted Turner from its board (Time Warner). These five companies own most of the major information outlets in the United States-- movie studios, radio stations, record companies, magazines, internet sites, and more, all appearing as if they are independent, but all under these five overlapping umbrellas. We need to break up the media for the sake of democracy, shatter it into a free press. The Democrats are not pointing this out for many reasons. They are complicit in taking corporate money and structured settlements. Even those Democrats who would oppose this cannot speak out for many reasons: they would be discredited and destroyed by the media, they could be killed like many of the scientists related to the anthrax scare, or they could simply want one of those high-paying corporate crony jobs. We need to cut out the corporate money entirely. The time to act is now. You don't need a PhD or even to have completed one of the many online degree programs to get out there and make a difference. The time is now and the person is you. Contact the media. Contact your representatives. Join a protest. Donate to appropriate organizations. You are not alone. You must act now! --- PACSTEAM.ORG ---
