Re-creation through recreation: Perry Martin at TEDxVirginiaTech
Perry Martin serves as Senior Associate Director of Community Learning for VT Engage: the Community-Learning Collaborative. A native and resident of the small rural community of Newport, VA in Giles County, Martin worked with a group of parents and community volunteers to establish t-ball, coach pitch, and softball teams in his community during the summer of 2013. His talk, "Re-creation Through Recreation," is a personal reflection on how community is revitalized through community-based sports and how youth baseball and softball serves as a link between generations and community members from a variety of backgrounds. In the spirit of ideas worth spreading, TEDx is a program of local, self-organized events that bring people together to share a TED-like experience. At a TEDx event, TEDTalks video and live speakers combine to spark deep discussion and connection in a small group. These local, self-organized events are branded TEDx, where x = independently organized TED event. The TED Conference provides general guidance for the TEDx program, but individual TEDx events are self-organized.* (*Subject to certain rules and regulations)

#myncstory - Niagara College Recreation Therapy program's Pen Pal Project
Are you interested in a career where you support individuals in enjoying an improved quality of life? As a recreation therapy professional, you will use meaningful recreation and leisure education, counselling and experiences to promote, restore, rehabilitate, and/or maintain quality of life and well-being. Therapeutic Recreation supports the development of strengths while addressing social, emotional, physical, spiritual and cognitive needs. Read about the Pen Pal Social on insideNC: https://www.niagaracollege.ca/insidenc/2018/04/10/pen-pal-project-connects-college-students-with-heidehof-seniors/ The Pen Pal Social marked the culmination of an inaugural Pen Pal project which paired 60 first-year Recreation Therapy students from the College with 20 seniors from Heidehof. Over a four-week period prior to the social, the students and seniors exchanged hand-written. Each letter focused on a pillar of well-being: happiness, compassion, diversity and gratitude. The final theme – that of social connectedness – was fulfilled when faculty and students visited their pen pals in person at Heidehof. “Reading Hedy’s letters made me so anxious to meet her,” first-year Recreation Therapy student Jodi Eberly said of her pen pal. Eberly along with fellow students Morgan Payne and Keesha Ally corresponded through the project with Heidehof resident Hedy Dueck. “It’s so important to take advantage of the opportunity to make connections with people,” said Ally. “It’s made me fall even more in love with my profession,” echoed Payne. At the social, students met with their pen pals and engaged in a number of socialization activities, like sharing their favourite foods, childhood experiences, and even playing ‘Never Have I Ever.’ #myNCstory #niagaracollege #myNC

Recreation Therapy at Recovery Ways | Utah Drug Rehab | Experiential Therapy
Recovery Ways offers many different types of therapies for our patients to help them understand their addiction and any co-occurring disorders, learn coping skills for sober living, and to help build support groups. This therapy is sometimes considered as experiential; meaning it is engaging in hands-on help that provides recovering addicts with the ability to process and deal with past trauma, offer a stronger sense of self, and exposure to new sober hobbies. Recreation therapy allows people to build more trust in themselves as well as others. Some of the more demanding activities can simulate real world stress. People in early recovery learn how to overcome obstacles without using drugs or alcohol. Recreation therapy can also help with some co-occurring disorders such as PTSD, OCD, eating disorders, anxiety, and depression. Treating these disorders and the addiction together make relapse less likely. These activities also help recovering addicts become more personally responsible, develop their communication skills, learn problem-solving skills, and teamwork and support. These are all skills they can use in their new sober lifestyles as well as the activities they participate in. Learn more about Recovery Ways, the premier Utah drug rehab, and their unique recreation therapy addiction treatment program here: http://www.recoveryways.com/programs/recreation-therapy/
