Soft-launching a product is sometimes used to gather data or feedback regarding its acceptance in the marketplace, prior to making it widely available during an official release or grand opening. A company may also choose a soft launch to test the functionality of a product, allowing adjustments to be made before a wider release and marketing effort are implemented. When implementing a soft launch strategy, a company releases a product with little or no marketing. A soft launch permits a company to react to customer demands quickly and effectively, introducing new features which will ultimately make the product successful. For companies with a limited marketing budget, a soft launch can allow them to focus on product development rather than marketing. Soft launches can be used with websites to help roll out new features, test or tweak a design (or possible redesign) allowing a design which users dislike to be quietly retired. Changes can also be made to increase the functionality of the website and respond to user requests. Gmail, for example, was soft launched in 2005 and fully launched one year later. In the instance of hardware products, a limited release soft launch can be used to test the market prior to a wide scale release. It also means companies are allowed to make last minute changes to the product after the soft launch. In many instances, soft launches of hardware are done in major metropolitan areas where the company has access to a wide variety of demographic groups. Soft launches are also used for software, with a small release being made to a limited group of individuals for beta testing. Software can be extensively tested by the releasing company, but ultimately it needs to be used to determine how effective it is. Major flaws in the design may emerge during beta testing and can be corrected before the product is released into a major market. Some software is soft launched on the Internet, which allows for easy software updates. Early beta testers can grow attached to the program and will continue to download new versions as they are released. Thus, companies often build up a loyal customer base, which spreads the word to other potential customers. Before committing to a hard launch in the United States, developers creating English mobile applications may choose to launch unofficially in less populous English-speaking countries such as Australia, Canada, and New Zealand, to refine the app by analyzing usage and spending habits, which are thought to be similar to those in the United States. This may also reduce the chances of the American press noticing the app. Canada has the additional benefit of having similar time zones to the United States. When a bricks and mortar business wishes to open prior to its grand opening (to test its capacity and train its staff), this may be referred to as a soft launch or soft opening. When a business wishes to close but still allow customers to shop, this is referred to as a soft close.

If you, like me, thought you could never make your own digital product(s) and market them, because it's just too overwhelming, there's just too much to do and maybe you just don't know enough about your topic, think again. In fact, don't think, don't procrastinate, don't even think about thinking about it.... just GET Torsten Muller's 'LAUNCHING BLUEPRINT'! Then, make yourself a drink, sit down in your favourite comfy chair where you can view the videos and immerse yourself completely in this straightforward, step-by-step guide to making and launching your own product(s) (You don't even need to take notes - Torsten has thought of that and included 'Check/Cheat Sheets'). I honestly can't think of a single thing Torsten has not included in this training. Not one thing! It's all there - everything you need to know and then, everything you need to actually DO! That said, you are going to need certain third party tools, most are just websites you need to be a member of, such as 'WarriorPlus', which is a site you will want to be selling your products on. However, Torsten does take you through some of the step-by-step training creating website pages using paid for software like the Optimizepress Theme. Whilst that's a very good theme for marketers it is by no means the only player in the market place, so I did find it a tad irritating that even though he makes clear you don't need the same tools he has used, he then proceeds to go into great detail on some of the trainings about exactly how to use his preferred tools. Not in my opinion a deal breaker, but I can foresee a few folks feeling a little bit lost if they don't have the exact same tools as Torsten. This is no - 'everything is done for you - you don't have to do any work' type system. At the PRSummit in San Francisco I got a chance to see Josh Weinberg's great keynote presentation, "Launch Lessons" where he shared tips for launching your company. I ran into Weinberg, founder of Digital Life Consulting Group again at the Mobilize 2011 conference in San Francisco, and I asked him to offer up three key tips for launching your product. Launch Tip #1 - The launch planning begins at product inception, not six weeks before product release Don't think about the launch as the party. You need to think of the launch as the culmination of the work that comes together on that day. That means plan your launch a year out, not six weeks before. Good example: Bose When they release a product the entire flow of connecting with the product has been thought out. There's customer support on their site when they announce and you can actually purchase the product. Bad example: Sony tablets A year ago Sony announced they were going to release tablets. At the time, you couldn't find any information on their site outside of the press releases. Nine months later you can pre-order the tablets but you still can't buy them. Launch Tip #2 -- Think about the entire customer experience, not just the product Understand every touch point a person will have with your product, from hearing about it to disposing it. • How do you get information about this product? • What's it like to buy it? • What's it like to unbox it? • What's it like to get it home? • How do they dispose of the product? Where does it go? • What about the preferences and data on the product? Is there a way to seamlessly upgrade within the product and to a new product? You need all of this information to keep customers around for the next iteration of products. You're developing an entire ecosystem of the entire customer experience. Good example: Apple They own every element of the customer ecosystem. Bad example: Every phone company Trying to move data from one handset to another sometimes works, partially works, and also the phone is loaded with crap you don't even want. Launch Tip #3 - Selling consumer products, not technology products Don't think about your product as speeds, feeds, and capacity. Users are going to create a relationship with your product. Make it friendly. One way to do this is to give your products names instead of model numbers. Good example: RIM, today They now call their products The Bold and The Curve. Bad example: RIM in the past and most tech companies Still focused on specs and not on the relationship the product will have with the customer. Smaller vendors usually launch in attractive cities or regions, while larger companies may enter a national market at once. Global roll-outs generally remain the preserve of multinational conglomerates, since they have the necessary size and make use of international distribution systems (e.g., Unilever, Procter & Gamble). Other multinationals may use a "lead-country" strategy: introducing the new product in one country/region at a time (e.g. Colgate-Palmolive). 3. Whom to target: Research- and test-marketing may identify a primary consumer group. The ideal primary consumer group should consist of innovators, early adopters, heavy users and/or opinion leaders. This will encourage adoption by other buyers in the market during the product-growth period. 4. How to launch: Prospective vendors should decide on an action plan for introducing a proposed product - a plan shaped by addressing the questions above. The vendor has to develop a viable marketing-mix and to structure a corresponding marketing-budget.

But the most important, number 1 factor, is sales. What Amazon wants to see is that your sales match (or beat) your top ranked competitor for your chosen keyword. Launching private label products is a unique business model, as most digital businesses are built on paid traffic. Matching your top competitor when you just launch can be challenging, but there is a quick “cheat” method to help you do so - product giveaways. This is when you create a discount coupon code that discounts an item down to just 99 cents. You then give this coupon away to people. When they use the coupon to buy the item, it counts as a sale. #2: Don’t Be Afraid to Spend Money to Make Money The most successful sellers who are launching private label products on Amazon FBA aren’t afraid to spend money because they know they’ll make it back in organic sales. Product giveaways are expensive, but they have big rewards from the organic traffic gain from ranking your product fast in the Amazon search engine. #3: The Minimum Order Quantity Isn’t Always the Best When launching private label products on Amazon FBA, if you can start with the minimum order quantity from a supplier, then this is the best thing to do because it minimizes your risk. But sometimes, the minimum order quantity isn’t enough to match the demand from your buyers. This is especially important if you are going to run a product giveaway to match your competitors sales velocity. You need to check how many sales they are making every week, and ensure that you have enough inventory to match those sales. #4: Be VERY Careful with Price Competition One marketing strategy when launching private label products on Amazon FBA is price. It’s not a bad thing, but it’s an advanced technique most new FBA private labellers should stay away from: 1) You risk getting into a pricing war. You lower your price, so your competitor lowers their price, so you lower your price. The only person that wins in a pricing war is the customer. 2) It’s often unnecessary. Your competitors in the market have already tested the prices for you, and have found what is called “market equilibrium.” This is when the price matches the demand. 3) You risk losing sales because of perceived value. Lowering the price psychologically lowers the value of your item. The safest place to price your items is somewhere in the middle. Not the most expensive, not the cheapest - somewhere in the middle. #5: Follow Up Emails are KEY for Getting Reviews Reviews are key for launching private label products on Amazon FBA. To get reviews you need to send emails. If you don’t follow up with the customer, your conversion rates can be as low as 2-3%. But a simple 3-email sequence can bump it up to over 10%. Here is a good 3-email sequence to follow when launching private label products on Amazon FBA: 1) Send the first email to the customer when their order is shipped. This builds anticipation and it also shows that you care about them as a customer since you are keeping them informed. 2) Send the second email a couple of days after the product has been delivered. Ask them to please leave a review. Another important thing to ask is for them to email you if they are having problems before they leave feedback. This should stop most negative reviews. 3) Finally, send them the first email a week after the product has been delivered. Ask them to leave a review, and tell them it would mean a lot to you if they did. It is also important to ask them to contact you if they are having any issues before leaving feedback. Remember: it is against the terms of service to ask for a positive review. But it is not against the Amazon terms of service to ask for an honest review!

Is there Revenue where I want it to be? Now this has two sides, remember - something too low for what I’m looking for is usually out of the books automatically (unless I’m looking to source a bunch of lower-revenue products, rather than one BIG-revenue product). However, something with a HUGE revenue might be too far out of my investment range. You’ll want to make sure that the AVERAGE here is where you want it to be, not just a couple ASINs. You can click into the Detailed Statistics in order to grab the average top 5 or 10 average revenues. Im not going to give an exact Revenue to look for, since it’s dependent on where you’re at and where you’re wanting to be. A consistent average across page 1 is really important. A good average to look for is something like at least $10-15k a month. The next metric for you to notice is the PRICE. Something that’s too low is going to often times going to simply have too low of a margin. It’s difficult for sellers that don’t already have a solid foundation of a number of products to come in and sell a product or two that are selling at $9 each. Aiming for a price of at least $15 is usually a good idea, in order to keep markets with a decent margin in front of you. Also, noticing a consistent price is important. Typically, it’s best to find markets that have prices that are around the same average rather than all over the place, just to ensure as much consistency as possible. If you go over into Market trends, you’ll be able to see the average price for the market. A substantial drop here is usually a red flag, indicating the potential for the price to drop significantly by the time you’re in the market. Finding a consistent price is huge. Sales - another classic indicator for a great market to get into. Again, no specific number here, but a market that has a high number of sales (similar to the revenue count) is going to be great, as long as you can handle the volume. So - look for high sales. REVIEWS. Potentially one of the most important metrics here to take into consideration. Reviews are going to make or break your ability to come in as a new seller and do well. If there are a lot of products in a market that have a LOT of reviews, it’s going to be hard for you to do well from the start. It doesn't mean you can’t do it, it just means you’re going to have a more difficult time. Your goal should be to find markets with the LOWEST amount of reviews. As I mentioned before, average review counts Above the 200 point become much harder to compete in, however again ideally you’re finding markets that have as low reviews as possible. Since reviews and sales are both so important, we have this metric here to help you make some quick decisions - the sales to reviews ratio. This ratio is simply the amount of sales relative to the amount of reviews - SO - basically, if a product has 100 sales and 10 reviews, the Sales to review ratio is 10. The higher amount of sales for a market, the better, right? At the same time, the lower amount of reviews, the better. Because of this, a HIGH sales to reviews ratio is going to be what you want to find. A Market with a high average sales to reviews ratio will indicate quickly that the market has a high amount of sales, and a low amount of reviews. One thing you need to really dig into here - search volume. Now, you won’t have access to this without Keyword Research, however it’s an ESSENTIAL part of validating markets.

The ARTEX ELT1000 is a value-priced upgrade to standard 121.5 MHz transmitters, which are no longer monitored by the COSPAS-SARSAT system. The 406 MHz transmitter produces a much more accurate position, typically 3 kilometers as compared with 15 to 20 kilometers for 121.5 MHz transmitters. When coupled to the aircraft navigation system via a navigation interface, the ELT1000's accuracy improves to approximately 100 meters. Because it is a single output ELT, the ELT1000 utilizes the same RF output and only one coax cable to transmit a 406 MHz emergency signal to COSPAS-SARSAT satellites and a local 121.5 Homing signal. With its new built-in navigational interface that does not require plane power to operate, the cost of installation is greatly reduced. The new 2-wire interface is compatible with older 121.5 MHz ELTs, so upgrading your ELT is simple and affordable. That is why if you want your product to sell well on Amazon, you need to have a plan for how your listing is going to get on the first page of results. The most important factor for how Amazon chooses which items go there is something called “sales velocity.” They will greatly favour items that are making the most sales. What you need to do then is use Jungle Scout to find out how many sales your top competitor is making, and then beat them for 2 weeks. To do this, you’ll need to have a plan in-place for how you’ll match their sales (discount coupons are the most common strategy for this). Before Launching on Amazon - Take Incredible Photos of Your Product Sales velocity is the most important factor when Amazon chooses which products to promote, but there is another - conversions. The higher your conversion rate, the more likely Amazon is to promote your products. Amazon have tested it and found that product photos are the #1 conversion factor. So get a test product sent to you and have professional photos taken of your product. Before Launching on Amazon - Get Friends & Family to Buy Your Product Another important conversion factor is reviews. Luckily you don’t need to have hundreds of reviews to make organic sales, but having a base of 10+ reviews is a good start. The easiest way to get reviews is to get your friends and family to buy your product and to then leave you a review. In addition, get your friends and family to search for your targeted keyword on Amazon, scroll through the item listings and THEN buy your product. This will send a strong signal to Amazon that they should rank your product for that keyword. Before Launching on Amazon - Have a Plan to Get Reviews from Customers A big reason why you should get your friends/family to leave a review is because anonymous customers rarely leave reviews. If you do not have a plan in-place to get reviews from customers, the conversion rate of purchase-to-review is less than 1%. However, if you have an email sequence in-place (Jump Send is a great way to do this) asking customers to leave a review, you can more than double your conversion rate. Before Launching on Amazon - Form a Limited Liability Company (LLC) To starting selling on Amazon, you DON’T need to legally form a company. You can start selling immediately as a sole proprietor. However, we strongly recommend that you consider forming an LLC because it protects you in-case anybody tries to sue you since it gives you “limited liability.” What this means is that creditors can’t go after you personally if your company gets sued. It isn’t necessary to form an LLC, but it’s the safe thing to do. Before Launching on Amazon - Have a Back-up Cash Plan When you sell on Amazon, you do not get paid straight away from your customers. Instead, Amazon holds your money for 2 weeks as a new seller. This means that you need to be able to pay for expenses in the meantime and not rely upon the money that you have earned as a seller on Amazon. In particular, you want to have a plan in-place for how you will be able to pay for new inventory in-case your product starts selling well, as Amazon does not like it if you run out of stock, so you need to make sure you always have inventory in the FBA warehouses. Before you launch on Amazon then, make sure you have some way to pay for expenses (so have some cash set aside, or have a credit card). Before Launching on Amazon - Know Your Sales Tax Obligations Make sure you read about your sales tax obligations. Even if you don’t live in the United States, you may still be required to collect and pay sales tax within certain states. Thank you so much for the question and I know that you are a repeat question asker or a person that asked a question. You’ve been on the show before I think and you’re doing really well and you launched your one product, it’s doing really well and now you’re launching product two and you want to know about this whole email list building and how can you then have that list help you when you launch your product which I think is smart. That’s something we’ve been talking about, that’s something that we’re currently doing internally as well. It’s definitely a great strategy. Here’s the deal. You can do it a few different ways. You can, if you’re doing a 25% off code, again how many do you want to sell? That’s the thing. What we need to do is we need to ask ourselves, we have this email list, let’s say we have… Let’s make it easy. Let’s say we have 1000 email addresses of people that are in our market. We’ve went through and we’ve built this emails list whether it’s through maybe an Instagram post that we brought them over to our contest page to win a certain item or maybe we did it for our last product. I think you said this was from your last product and you were able to get people to join your email list through that. I think that’s what you said. We know that they are definitely interested in this type of product or a similar product. Let’s say you have a thousand emails. Now, not all 1000 would even buy it at a discount. We know that, we understand that. But how many do we want to promote with or use as promotions in the beginning? That’s what we need to figure out. So let’s just say that it’s we would like to basically have 25 sold additionally to whatever else we could sell through pay per click or anything else. We want to sell 25. That means that you’re either going to create a code that has a max limit on it which there’s been a little bit of cockiness here within Amazon about this. Depending on when this airs we may have a video to help through this if not there will be one coming here soon. Check out the show notes page again for this one. [00:25:22] Scott: This is episode 298 so again check out the show notes page if that video is available I will post in the show notes but just understand that a max limit means that you’re going to allow how many that person can use that code towards because they took away the dollar amount at least as of the time of this recording they have but there is percentage off you can give but also you can limit it to a max quantity now. But the point is this, a really easy way of doing this… There’s two easy ways. The easy way of doing this is to say, “Hey I’m going to let 25 people have this for a discount. Email me if you’re interested,” and then have one time use codes and you just send them each, a one-time use code. Yes, that means that’s going to be 20 or 25 emails that you’re going to personally do, you can do it yourself, you can hire a VA but yes you’re going to want to manually do those and give them a one-time use or you’re going to want to make sure that you have the max order set up. This way here when you give out that code it doesn’t land in someone’s hand that can just buy a whole bunch. So you gotta be careful with that but it’s 25% discount. Maybe, just maybe you give out that code, maybe someone does buy a whole bunch, maybe you didn’t do the max order which you should but if you didn’t and it got leaked out or something and you’re still selling a bunch at 25% off maybe that’s not the end of the world, maybe that’s a good thing. It’s the people that are trying to give it away for over 50% off and then that code thing isn’t implemented then that’s a problem because now you’re giving away product and your inventory gets wiped out. You gotta be careful with that. That’s not really want we’re about. What we’re talking about is how should you deliver that? You could do it that way or you send it out to them. You limit the code to 25% and you just basically use that code. You can also like I said, do it manually. “Hey, we’re going to let 25 people get this for this discount, email us if you’re interested.” They email you back, you forward them one of those codes. The other way to do it is to do a flash sale.
