Create A 'Wheel of Fortune' Spinning Name Selector in PowerPoint

319 ratings | 28306 views
In this tutorial I'll show you how to align shapes radially in a circle with exact accuracy so that you can create an animated spinning wheel of names or text that can be used in Microsoft PowerPoint as, for example, a random student name picker. ** Please note that if using an older version of PowerPoint (2006 or earlier) you will need to make the change below ** I have discovered that this can be an issue for older versions of PowerPoint. The solution is to add a slide before the wheel slide, with an automatic transition to the next slide set to as short a time as you can - 0.2 seconds. Then add a button on the wheel slide that says 'Reset' that links back to the first slide. When you play the presentation the first slide won't even be seen because it will transition straight to the wheel slide, and then when you click the reset button you'll find that the wheel resets and the result is always random. ----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- I have now uploaded a copy of this template to TES Resources for anyone interested to download free. https://www.tes.com/teaching-resource/random-spinning-name-selector-wheel-of-fortune-11845816

Hi,Thanks for this video, helped so much. One more thing was wondering is I can add a sound effect at the end of the spin.

Great tutorial. Thanks a lot. I'd like to complicate the wheel a bit and am curious about the way of doing it. I'd like to have the questions hidden and only when the wheel stops get the question or picture appear. Any idea how to do so? The reason behind it is that I have 7 year olds who won't wait until the wheel stops but will give answers to all sectors straight away.
Gloria Romero-Martinez (16 days ago)
Thank you! This has been an excellent step-by-step tutorial. Is there a way to add a clicking sound to the wheel as it spins?

how to save it like gif
The Tech Train (28 days ago)
You could copy and paste as an image, then copy the image into a graphics program and save it as a GIF. Or do you mean an animated GIF?

Hi, this is such a great tutorial. How can I export it in a way that it still has the animation and the interaction of the clicks?
The Tech Train (28 days ago)
I'm glad you liked it. What do you mean by 'export' though? In to what format?

Wow!!! That's a teacher!!! I'm learning how to programme small apps in ppt, too. I've got a question. Is there any way to add a sound effect that plays as the roulette is spinning? And is there a way to trigger the animation by clicking some kind of button? Thanks in advance and congratulations for the channel.
The Tech Train (28 days ago)
Thank you so much for your kind words! I'm glad you liked the video. To answer your question, the button issue is actually covered in the description below the video. Adding a sound can be done by double clicking the animation in the Animation Pane and clicking on the 'Sound' menu in the pop up panel. Let me know if you need more help, or that doesn't fix the issue.

Is there a certain way to remove the names that had already been chosen? So the name won't be chosen twice?
Ivan Ong (5 months ago)
Dear The Tech Train, I downloaded your sample PPS and I realize the 2nd attempt and onwards, it always landed on the purple pie, no longer random, can you advise or guide us how to solve that problem? Regards

I'm certainly not a lady, and have never gone by the name of Cynthia! Please use the email address listed on the 'About' page of my channel.

Hi there, a lady by the name of Cynthia (Online Customer Service) replied to my email, asking me to specify my problem, is that not suppose to be you? Did I send to correct email?

Great idea, but when I click it more the 3 times it always stops at the same slice, it is not random anymore... any idea why or how to change it to always random?

I'm using office Professional 2016. and I tried your suggestion. still after the 3rd time it always stops at the same slice... :-( Any suggestions ? I really want to use this....

How can I add any sound effects while my wheel rotates and stops ?
Mimi Wilson (6 months ago)
This is probably the easiest to follow tutorial I have ever tried. Thank you very much!
But I want spin wheel, since catchy and I tried to do it but after adding spin animation the names' aren't rotating but only the wheel is rotating.
The Tech Train (6 months ago)
The text boxes need to be attached to the wheel. Select the wheel and all the text boxes, then right click and choose 'Group', then add the spin animation to the group.
Can you tell me what the alternative is?
The Tech Train (6 months ago)
I think this would be the most suitable method for you: https://youtu.be/n17aOirDOUw
I need this wheel for 64 students, so when followed your video and ungrouped the pie chart all the sectors became lines, so now how can I add text boxes there, can regroup and add text boxes?

Good morning I have been tasked with finding a way of choosing a winner for our Safety Draw. The only draw back is we will have approx 250 people . I can use numbers rather than names but not sure how I can do this ...can you help.
The Tech Train (6 months ago)
To be honest with that many sectors the size will be so small that it will be very fiddly to do I imagine. I'd suggest looking at alternative ways of choosing random names - there is at least one alternative on this channel which I think would probably be more suitable.

I've followed this guide, but my wheel doesn't stop randomly. It jumps back to the starting orientation on the second click. Any advice?
The Tech Train (7 months ago)
This can happen if you're running an older version of PowerPoint. In which case the solution is to add a blank slide before the wheel slide with a transition that is 0.1 second long, and happens automatically. Then on the wheel slide add a button that links back to the previous blank slide. This will reset the wheel, making sure it's random every time.

Since last week, I have been looking for a random name generator that I can use for my report this week to keep my classmates' attention during the presentation. This is one is the best, if not the best. Thank you for sharing.
